Full job description

About Splaat Photo

Splaat Photo is an innovative, award-winning school event photography company. We specialise in capturing high-quality, dynamic images and videos of school life — from sports fixtures and drama performances to music recitals and classroom activities. Our mission is to create cherished memories for families while prioritising children’s safety, privacy, and exceptional customer service.

We’ve been in business for over a decade, winning awards such as Hertfordshire Business School - Best Growth Business and British Library - Innovating for Growth - Scale Up.

The Role

We’re seeking enthusiastic, reliable photographers and videographers to join our freelance team. Whether you’re just starting out or have years of experience, we’d love to hear from you.

  • Trainee photographers & videographers — no professional experience needed; full training and equipment provided. A very limited number of trainee positions are available.
  • Experienced photographers & videographers — bring your skills and high-quality kit to our team, and enjoy higher rates and more complex assignments.

You’ll be responsible for capturing high-quality photos and videos of school life, creating memories that schools and families will cherish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Photographing and filming a wide range of school events: portraiture, sports, drama, music, prize givings, candid, school life, and more.
  • Creating a positive, welcoming atmosphere when working with children, teachers, and parents.
  • Following strict safeguarding and data protection protocols, ensuring only children with consent are photographed (full training provided).
  • Managing your schedule efficiently and travelling to various schools as required.

What We're Looking For

  • A passion for photography — whether you’re learning or experienced, you care about producing great work.
  • Confidence and professionalism — able to build rapport with school staff, children, and families.
  • Reliability and organisation — punctual, diligent, and adaptable to a busy calendar of events.
  • Great with children — enjoy working in school environments.
  • Technical skills (for experienced applicants) — a strong understanding of manual camera controls (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and competence in fast-paced event photography.

Equipment Requirements

  • Trainees — no personal equipment needed; we provide a full professional kit.
  • Experienced photographers — we welcome applicants with high-quality kit (mirrorless/DSLR bodies and lenses) offering a good range of equipment suitable for school photography.
  • All candidates — must have reliable access to a laptop or desktop computer for uploading and managing images.

What We Offer

  • Full training for trainees — including photography fundamentals, videography techniques, and safeguarding protocols.
  • Flexible freelance work — freedom to accept or decline assignments, making it easy to fit Splaat Photo work around other commitments.
  • Regular opportunities — consistent work during the academic year (we photograph approx. 2500 school events annually).
  • Varied, rewarding work — no two days are the same. You’ll capture everything from fast-paced sports action and dynamic drama performances to formal prize-givings, vibrant music concerts, candid moments of school life, classroom activities, and stunning portraiture. Every assignment offers something new and meaningful.
  • Supportive team — work alongside professionals passionate about quality and safeguarding.
  • Travel and subsistence expenses covered — hotel stays if required.
  • Growth opportunities — progress to more complex assignments as you gain experience.

Location

We're looking to hire freelance photographers to attend our schools that are based in London. However, the opportunity for work further afield is also available as we also work with schools across the Home Counties, the West Midlands and Yorkshire.

In addition, we take on seasonal projects at schools throughout the UK.

Pay & Hours of Work

  • Inexperienced photographers start from £12.21 per hour.
  • More experienced photographers start at a higher rate depending on their skills, experience, and the variety and quality of their own kit used. Rates increase over time based on performance and positive feedback.
  • Flexible and varied hours based on school event bookings — mostly during term time. We are consistently busy throughout the academic year, with quieter periods during school holidays.
  • Start times are often 8:00 or 8:30 am; some evening or weekend work may occasionally be required.
  • Seasonal fluctuations align with the academic calendar.
