Full job description

As a Theatre Technician, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a diverse programme of performances, events and productions. Working as part of the technical team, you will provide practical assistance with large-scale get-ins and get-outs, general stagecraft and show crew duties, and the setup of lighting, sound and audio-visual equipment. You will help ensure productions run smoothly and safely, contributing to high-quality experiences for performers, visiting companies and audiences alike. Operation of technical equipment during performances may also be required.

Whilst you will be primarily based at one of our venues, you will be required to work across both venues to support operational requirements and the delivery of our programme.

The role will be offered on a full-time basis of 168 hours over a 4-week period, including weekends and evenings

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • To work as part of the technical team in the smooth running of fit-ups, rehearsals, performances, changeovers and get-outs.
  • Assisting in the building of show set elements and general stage craft
  • Rigging of lighting, sound and A/V systems
  • Counterweight flying
  • Leading a team of casual staff
  • To be able to function in any appropriate position as part of a performance crew
  • To participate in the cleaning and maintenance of all technical equipment and areas
  • Representing Mayflower values and to deliver a professional service to visiting companies

Our ideal applicant will have:

Essential qualities:

  • Experience of working in a theatre, live events, entertainment venue, or similar technical environment.
  • Practical knowledge of stagecraft, including show crew duties, scenery handling, and get-ins/get-outs.
  • Experience setting up and operating technical equipment, such as lighting, sound and audio-visual systems.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements within a live performance environment, including manual handling and safe working practices.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and support visiting companies, performers and colleagues in a professional manner.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to remain calm under pressure in a live event environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively.
  • Reliable, proactive and adaptable approach to work, with a willingness to undertake a wide variety of technical tasks.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays as required by the performance schedule.
  • Physically capable of carrying out the practical aspects of the role, including lifting, carrying and standing for extended periods.
  • Commitment to delivering high standards of service and contributing to a positive experience for audiences, performers and visiting companies.

  • Let your personality shine through: AI-generated responses can sometimes feel generic or impersonal. Your application is a chance to showcase your unique experiences, skills, and enthusiasm—make sure your voice comes through clearly.
  • Show your genuine interest: A personal touch can make a big difference. Applications that reflect your own words and motivations often stand out more and help us get to know you better.
  • Be accurate and honest: It’s important that all information you provide is truthful and genuinely reflects your background and experience.
  • Prepare for the next steps: If your application relies heavily on AI, it may be harder to speak confidently about your experiences during interviews. We want you to feel prepared and authentic throughout the process.
