Full job description
Sheffield | Part-time / Freelance | Term-time and school holiday opportunities
Link Learning Communities CIC is a Sheffield-based social enterprise creating opportunities for children and young people to take part in high-quality arts and creative activities.
We work with primary schools and community partners across Sheffield, delivering after-school art clubs, holiday programmes and larger creative projects. As our work continues to grow, we're looking for enthusiastic artists, creative practitioners and arts educators to join our team.
The role
Initially, a key part of the role will be leading our popular after-school art clubs in Sheffield primary schools.
These usually run for approximately one hour after school, typically between 3:15pm and 4:15pm. We expect to have opportunities across several days each week and would be happy to hear from applicants who can offer anything from one afternoon to several afternoons per week.
We're looking to build relationships with creative practitioners who would also like to become involved in our wider programme. This includes paid work during the school holidays, particularly through our HAF holiday programmes, as well as opportunities to work on other funded arts, community and education projects as Link Learning continues to grow.
What will you be doing?
You'll lead fun, accessible and child-centred creative sessions for primary-aged children.
Projects might include:
- Drawing, painting and illustration
- Sculpture and 3D making
- Collage and mixed media
- Collaborative artworks
- Design challenges and creative problem-solving
- Projects exploring children's own ideas, interests and communities
We want children to experiment, make choices, develop their own ideas and gain confidence in themselves as creative people.
Who are we looking for?
You might be an artist, illustrator, designer, maker, photographer, arts graduate, teacher, teaching assistant, youth worker or community practitioner.
You don't necessarily need professional teaching experience.
We're much more interested in finding people who are creative, reliable, confident with children and enthusiastic about helping young people make things and explore ideas.
Essential
- Experience working with children or young people, either professionally or through relevant voluntary/community experience
- Confidence leading a group of primary-aged children
- An interest in art, creativity and making
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently and take responsibility for a session
- A positive, encouraging and inclusive approach
Desirable
- Experience delivering art or other creative activities
- A background or qualification in art, illustration, design, photography, craft or another creative discipline
- Experience working in schools, community arts or informal education
- Experience working with children with SEND or from a range of backgrounds
- Access to your own transport, although this is not essential
Hours and availability
After-school clubs usually take place Monday to Friday between approximately 3:15pm and 4:15pm during school term time.
We're recruiting for a growing programme, so the exact number of hours available will depend on your availability and the schools and projects you work with.
You do not need to be available every day. Please tell us which afternoons you are normally available when applying.
There will also be opportunities for longer days and additional hours during school holidays, including work on our HAF holiday programmes, as well as other creative projects throughout the year.
We're particularly keen to hear from people interested in developing an ongoing relationship with Link Learning and taking on more work as our programme grows.
Safeguarding
Link Learning Communities CIC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect everyone working with us to share this commitment.
Appointments are subject to safer recruitment checks appropriate to the role, including:
- Enhanced DBS check with Children's Barred List
- Satisfactory references, including the most recent employer where appropriate
- Verification of identity
- Verification of the right to work in the UK
We follow safer recruitment practices in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education.
How to apply
Please send us your CV and a short covering letter telling us:
- A little about you and your creative practice/interests
- Your experience working with children or young people
- The kinds of creative activities you would enjoy delivering
- Which weekday afternoons you are generally available
- Whether you would also be interested in school holiday/project work
