Full job description

Graduate PA – Journalism Student & Uni Life

Are you a recent graduate looking for something different? Perhaps you have an interest in journalism, media, photography, current affairs or content creation – or simply want a rewarding role where no two days are the same?

AskJules is recruiting a team of four friendly, enthusiastic and reliable Personal Assistants (PAs) to support a young woman as she begins an exciting new chapter studying BA Journalism Studies at the University of Sheffield.

This is much more than a traditional care role. You’ll be supporting our client to live independently and enjoy the full university experience – from lectures, studying and exploring Sheffield to shopping, meals out, nights at the pub, social events, travel and spontaneous adventures.

Location: Sheffield during university term time and Buckinghamshire during university holidays
Start Date: 20 September 2026
Hours: 36–48 hours per week, mixture of day and night shifts
Pay: £15.00 per hour
Experience: No previous care experience necessary – full training provided

Meet Our Client

Our client is starting her first year at the University of Sheffield, studying BA Journalism Studies.

She is a full-time powered wheelchair user and has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 2, which causes muscle weakness. She requires physical assistance with everyday tasks, but she knows exactly how she wants to live her life and is looking for PAs who will enable her to do just that.

The best way to introduce her is in her own words:

“I’m passionate about journalism, writing, photography and creating content. I love meeting new people, keeping up with current affairs and advocating for disability rights and equality.

Outside of studying, you’ll often find me shopping, visiting museums, going out for meals, enjoying the pub or a night out, watching rom-coms, listening to Lana Del Rey, drinking matcha, or planning spontaneous adventures ‘for the plot!’

I love fashion, styling outfits, doing my makeup and making sure my hair looks great every day.

Family and friends are incredibly important to me, so I’m looking for PAs who can naturally fit into my life, chat comfortably with my friends and flatmates, and support me without taking centre stage.

I also love travelling, so if you’re happy to accompany me on trips around the UK and abroad, that’s a huge bonus!”

What Will the Role Involve?

As one of our client’s PAs, your job is ultimately about enabling independence.

One shift might involve getting ready for university, attending lectures and spending the afternoon in the library. Another could include shopping, getting ready for a night out, meeting friends or heading off on a trip.

You’ll provide the practical and personal assistance our client needs so that she can concentrate on being a first-year student, pursuing her ambitions and enjoying university life.

Your support will include:

  • Personal care, dressing, grooming and daily routines
  • Cooking, cleaning, shopping and other household tasks
  • Accompanying our client to lectures, appointments and social events
  • Supporting her to access university life and the wider community
  • Travel and using public transport
  • Transfers, repositioning and mobility support
  • Assisting with specialist equipment, including her powered wheelchair, ceiling hoist, suprapubic catheter, BiPAP and cough assist machine

Don't worry if you haven't used this equipment before – full training will be provided.

Who Would Suit This Role?

Personality and attitude are just as important to our client as previous experience.

She is looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly, sociable and easy to talk to
  • Positive, adaptable and organised
  • Comfortable in both academic and social environments
  • Respectful of her independence and able to follow her guidance
  • Professional and discreet when providing personal care
  • Flexible and happy to travel when required
  • Confident enough to fit naturally around friends, family and flatmates
  • Equipped with a good sense of humour and willing to make the most of university life

You don't need to come from a care background. This could particularly suit a recent graduate or someone interested in journalism, media, communications, photography, current affairs or the creative industries who would enjoy working alongside someone with similar interests.

Most importantly, our client wants PAs who will help her be the student and young woman she wants to be – supporting her independence rather than taking over.

Interested?

If this sounds like the kind of role you would enjoy, we'd love to hear from you.

When applying, please tell us about yourself and your interests in your covering letter, particularly anything you think you may have in common with our client.
