Job Overview

Staff Partners are currently recruiting for an experienced Band 7 Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) to join a dedicated multidisciplinary healthcare team within a prison healthcare setting. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and compassionate clinician who is passionate about improving outcomes for individuals affected by substance misuse and alcohol dependency.Working within a secure environment, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based prescribing services, supporting recovery journeys, reducing health inequalities, and promoting long-term wellbeing.

Please note: Previous prison healthcare experience is an essential requirement for this role. Applications will only be considered from candidates with prior experience working within a prison or secure healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver independent non-medical prescribing clinics (minimum six sessions per week).
  • Assess, diagnose, prescribe, and manage treatment plans for individuals with substance and alcohol use disorders.
  • Undertake alcohol and drug detoxification programmes.
  • Conduct comprehensive physical health assessments, including:
  • Blood-borne virus (BBV) screening
  • Sexual health assessments
  • Vaccinations
  • Phlebotomy
  • ECGs and health screening
  • Develop and implement personalised recovery-focused care plans.
  • Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and support to nursing and recovery staff.
  • Mentor newly qualified NMPs and support student placements.
  • Work collaboratively with prison healthcare teams, GPs, pharmacists, mental health services, social care providers, and external agencies.
  • Promote harm reduction initiatives, including overdose prevention and naloxone provision.
  • Support service development, quality improvement, audits, and governance activities.

Essential Requirements

  • Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, or Allied Health Professional with current professional registration.
  • Qualified Independent Non-Medical Prescriber (V300).
  • Significant experience working as an Independent Prescriber within substance misuse and/or alcohol services.
  • Strong understanding of harm reduction approaches, detoxification pathways, and recovery-focused interventions.
  • Excellent knowledge of medications used in substance and alcohol treatment.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong clinical assessment, decision-making, and risk management skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational abilities.

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience working within a prison or criminal justice healthcare environment.
  • Mentorship or practice assessor qualification.
  • Knowledge of co-existing mental health conditions and substance misuse.
  • Experience delivering training and clinical supervision.
  • Understanding of physical health conditions associated with substance and alcohol use.
