Full job description
At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.
Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.
Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.
By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.
Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior Lecturer in Medical Ultrasound to join the Department of Health and Life Sciences as part of our Diagnostic Imaging and Medical Ultrasound Team, working at the forefront of sonography education and workforce development across the Midlands and beyond and supporting the delivery of high-quality services across the University.
In this role, you will drive the development and expansion of reporting sonography education at the university, contributing to research outputs and workforce development initiatives. Key responsibilities include, working closely with MITA partners to develop, deliver, and evaluate training programmes that improve sonographic services and education across multiple professions. Leading and contributing to projects funded through MITA, managing deliverables, developing research or training proposals, and reporting on outcomes to ensure services are efficient, compliant, and aligned to University priorities.
Key Responsibilities
- Representing BCU at key stakeholder meetings, regional forums, and national events related to sonography training and workforce development.
- Establish and strengthen relationships with NHS Trusts, private sector providers, and professional bodies
- Support and deliver teaching, learning, and assessment activities across the MSc Medical Ultrasound and Diagnostic Imaging programmes, with a focus on reporting sonography and advanced clinical practice.
- Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and professionally relevant learning environment that reflects the challenges faced by part-time postgraduate learners balancing study with clinical commitments.
- Deliver practical and simulation-based sonography training to a diverse multiprofessional learner group, including radiology doctors and registrars, radiographers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Take a leading role in the development and delivery of innovative teaching methods, integrating simulation technologies, digital learning tools, and diverse pedagogical approaches and contribute to curriculum design and development, including the integration of advanced practice, artificial intelligence in imaging, and simulation-based education.
- Provide academic leadership, personal tutoring, and mentorship to students and learners, supporting their progression, clinical competency, and professional development.
- Oversee and conduct the assessment of sonographers in both academic and clinical settings, ensuring alignment with national standards and regulatory requirements including travel to and support clinical sites across the West Midlands and beyond, working directly with students, trainees, and clinical partners on placement and in practice.
- Engage in interprofessional applied research focused on ultrasound, simulation-based education, and clinical workforce innovation.
- Support bids for research or enterprise funding and contribute to the wider scholarly activity of the Faculty.
- Contribute to student recruitment and public engagement activities.
- Supervise student research projects and support academic and clinical placement development for students and clinical partners.
Essential Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Radiography or a relevant allied health profession.
- Postgraduate qualification in Medical Ultrasound.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Significant post-registration clinical experience in medical ultrasound, with a broad sonographic skill set. Experience in abdominal, obstetric, and gynaecological ultrasound is particularly desirable.
- Demonstrable experience of teaching, training, and/or clinical supervision in academic, clinical, or professional education settings.
- Experience of leading or contributing to multi-professional education or training programmes.
- Ability to plan, prioritise, and manage own workload independently and effectively in a busy environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of learners and professional stakeholders.
- Ability and willingness to drive and travel to clinical sites and NHS Trusts across the West Midlands and occasionally further afield.
Desirable Requirements
- Additional clinical experience in vascular ultrasound and/or musculoskeletal (MSK) sonography.
- Working towards or holding a Master's or Doctoral qualification.
- Experience of leading projects or service improvement initiatives independently.
- Experience of securing or contributing to research or enterprise funding bids.
- Experience of establishing or managing external partnerships with NHS, private, or professional body organisations.
- External recognition through involvement with professional bodies, national committees, or peer-reviewed publication.
