Job Title: Plasterer Multi-Trade
Company: Gratton Construction
Location: Grantham and South Kesteven District
Reports to: Site Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-time/Permanent
Job Purpose:
The Plasterer Multi-Trade will be responsible for carrying out all aspects of plastering work in council and local authority planned works and empty homes/void properties. This includes preparing walls and ceilings post-demolition of kitchens and bathrooms, ensuring surfaces are ready for painting and installation. The level of plastering required will vary depending on the condition of the walls and ceilings. Additionally, the role includes multi-skilled work to assist the void team in carrying out general maintenance and repair tasks as required.
Key Responsibilities: Plastering Works:
- Prepare and apply different levels and types of plastering to walls and ceilings post-demolition of kitchens and bathrooms.
- Overboarding and Skimming: Install plasterboard over existing ceilings or damaged walls, ensuring a smooth surface ready for finishing.
- Hacking Off to Brick: Remove old plaster down to brickwork where necessary, applying appropriate base coats before final finishing.
- Skim Coat Plastering: Provide a smooth, even finish suitable for painting and decorating.
- Bonding Coat Applications: Use bonding coats on uneven surfaces or where deep fills are required before final skimming.
- Float and Set Work: Apply a backing coat and finish with a smooth setting coat to create a solid, level surface.
- Patch Repairs: Address areas of minor damage, filling and skimming to blend with existing plaster.
- Full Re-Plastering: When walls and ceilings are in poor condition, complete full re-plastering to create a sound and smooth surface.
Preparation & Surface Readiness:
- Assess the condition of walls and ceilings after wallpaper stripping, tile removal, or demolition.
- Prepare surfaces by removing loose plaster, filling holes and cracks, and applying necessary bonding agents.
- Ensure proper drying and curing times before progressing to the next stages of work.
Multi-Trade Responsibilities:
- Assist in basic carpentry tasks such as replacing skirting boards, architraves, or minor stud wall repairs.
- Carry out tiling work where required, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms post-plastering.
- Undertake basic painting and decorating tasks to complete refurbishment works.
- Perform minor plumbing and general maintenance tasks as part of the voids team.
- Work collaboratively with other trades to ensure smooth project progression.
Working in Empty Homes/Void Properties:
- Complete full-house plastering as required in void properties before re-occupancy.
- Ensure walls and ceilings are properly finished to a high standard, suitable for decoration.
- Work efficiently to meet deadlines for property readiness.
Health & Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations, ensuring safe working practices on-site.
- Properly use and maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report any hazards, ensuring a safe environment for all workers.
General Duties:
- Maintain high-quality workmanship, ensuring completed plastering meets industry standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, disposing of waste materials properly.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding project status and requirements.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Proven experience as a Plasterer, particularly in planned works, maintenance, or void properties.
- Knowledge of various plastering techniques, including skimming, bonding, floating, setting, overboarding, and full re-plastering.
- Multi-trade skills, including basic carpentry, tiling, painting, and minor plumbing.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good problem-solving skills to assess and determine the best approach based on surface conditions.
- Understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential).
Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plastering (or equivalent experience).
- CSCS card (preferred but not essential).
- Asbestos Awareness (preferred but training can be provided).
Working Conditions:
- Work will be carried out on various sites, including occupied council properties and empty homes.
- Some lifting and manual handling may be required.
- Work may involve exposure to dust and construction materials, requiring the use of PPE.
