About Insight Wellbeing Services

Insight Wellbeing Services is a specialist provider of alternative education, tutoring and therapeutic mentoring for children and young people.

We work in partnership with Local Authorities, Virtual Schools, schools, social care professionals and families to provide individualised support for young people who may struggle to access traditional education.

The children and young people we support may include those who are:

• Children in Care or previously looked after
• Children with a social worker
• Experiencing Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
• Living with SEND, including autism and ADHD
• Experiencing social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs
• At risk of, or have experienced, exclusion
• Working below age-related expectations
• Awaiting an appropriate school or specialist placement
• Receiving alternative provision as part of an EHCP
• Experiencing barriers to learning following trauma, disruption or adverse experiences

We are looking for self-employed tutors with resilience, perseverance and a trauma-informed approach to education who can help young people reconnect with learning and achieve meaningful educational progress.

About the Role

This is not always traditional tutoring.

Many of the young people referred to Insight have experienced significant disruption to their education. Some may have been out of school for a considerable period, have low confidence in their academic ability or find traditional learning environments difficult.

Our tutors therefore need to be able to build a relationship first, understand the individual and adapt education around their needs.

Tutoring is predominantly delivered face-to-face on a 1:1 basis, although some small-group and online opportunities may also be available.

Sessions generally take place during school hours, between 9:00am and 3:00pm, Monday to Friday. Some referrals may require provision outside these hours.

As a self-employed tutor, you can identify your availability and the amount of work you are able to undertake.

Who We're Looking For

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS is desirable, but it is not essential.

We are keen to hear from people with strong educational experience who have supported children and young people in 1:1 or small-group settings.

You may currently be, or have previously worked as a:

• Qualified Teacher
• Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
• Teaching Assistant
• Learning Support Assistant
• Functional Skills Tutor
• SEND/SEMH Practitioner
• Alternative Provision Tutor
• Intervention Tutor
• Cover Supervisor
• Further Education or Post-16 Tutor
• Learning Mentor with experience delivering educational interventions

We particularly encourage experienced HLTAs and teaching support professionals to apply. We recognise that many HLTAs have extensive experience planning and delivering interventions, supporting individual learners and adapting education for children who need a different approach.

We are interested in what you can bring to the young person, not simply the letters after your name.

Key Responsibilities

As an Insight Tutor, you will:

• Deliver engaging and individualised 1:1 or small-group tuition
• Plan learning around the young person's individual starting point, needs and abilities
• Support learning in English, Maths, Science and/or other curriculum areas appropriate to your experience
• Deliver Functional Skills where appropriate
• Identify gaps in learning and provide targeted educational interventions
• Adapt teaching approaches and resources to meet individual learning needs
• Build positive, professional relationships with young people who may initially be reluctant to engage
• Support young people to overcome social, emotional and educational barriers to learning
• Help rebuild confidence, motivation and positive attitudes towards education
• Work towards agreed educational outcomes and individual learning targets
• Monitor, record and evidence educational progress
• Complete session reports and other required documentation to a professional standard
• Contribute to reviews of the young person's provision
• Liaise appropriately with Insight colleagues and, where required, schools, families, Local Authority professionals and other stakeholders
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times
• Follow Insight's safeguarding, data protection and professional practice requirements

A Trauma-Informed Approach

We believe that behaviour is communication.

Young people referred to Insight may have experienced trauma, instability, disrupted relationships, exclusion or repeated difficulties within education.

We therefore expect our tutors to demonstrate patience, curiosity, consistency and unconditional positive regard.

A young person refusing to complete a worksheet does not necessarily mean they do not want to learn. Sometimes the first challenge is helping them feel safe enough to engage.

For one learner, progress might mean completing a GCSE Maths topic.

For another, progress might initially mean sitting with their tutor for 30 minutes, having a conversation and attempting their first piece of work in months.

Connection comes before correction, and engagement often comes before attainment.

Our tutors need to recognise both while maintaining appropriate educational ambition for every young person.

Essential Requirements

Applicants should have:

• Experience working with children or young people within education, tutoring, learning support or a comparable environment
• Experience supporting learning in a 1:1 and/or small-group setting
• The ability and confidence to plan and deliver educational activities
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills
• Resilience, patience and perseverance
• The ability to adapt teaching and learning to the needs of an individual child
• An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities
• Strong written communication and record-keeping skills
• The ability to work independently and manage your own professional responsibilities
• A commitment to inclusive and trauma-informed practice
• A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for face-to-face referrals, where travel is required

Successful applicants will also need to hold an appropriate Enhanced DBS and meet Insight's safer recruitment and compliance requirements. Where required for a particular referral or commissioning arrangement, this may need to be registered with the DBS Update Service.

Desirable Experience and Qualifications

We would particularly welcome applicants with:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS
• HLTA status or substantial HLTA experience
• Functional Skills teaching experience
• Experience delivering GCSE English, Maths and/or Science
• Experience within alternative provision
• Experience working with SEND
• Experience supporting SEMH or EBSA
• Experience working with Children in Care or children with a social worker
• Experience working with EHCPs
• Experience supporting young people back into education following periods of non-attendance
• Experience of assessment, intervention planning and tracking educational progress

We know that an excellent tutor does not necessarily have to come from a traditional teaching background.

You might be a qualified teacher who has decided that the classroom is no longer where you do your best work.

You might be an experienced HLTA who has spent years delivering interventions and working independently with children.

You might be a Functional Skills tutor who is brilliant at making English and Maths relevant to real life.

Or you might have extensive experience supporting young people 1:1 and understand how to use a positive relationship to help a young person reconnect with education.

What matters to us is that you can engage, encourage and educate.

We need people who will persevere when a young person initially says, "I'm not doing any work today."

People who understand that progress isn't always linear.

And people who genuinely believe that a young person's previous experience of education does not have to determine what happens next.
