Job overview

We are looking for an individual who has a passion to learn & would like to increase their knowledge and skills within the Oncology / Haematology environment on a fixed term contract for 1 year.

The individual will support and work closely with registered practitioners to deliver a high standard of care to patients, families and their carers in a safe and supportive environment without the need for direct supervision. The individual will also work with the wider team in developing and maintaining services provided to patients and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the ward/clinical area or department.

The post holder will deliver an excellent patient focused service for patients having all aspects of treatment including chemotherapy and supportive therapies at the Williams Day Unit.


Main duties of the job


  • Welcome patients to the Unit as they arrive, acknowledging the anxiousness some patients feel attending and offering reassurance as they arrive
  • Perform and assist with agreed procedures appropriate to the role and function within the guidelines set down by the Trust.
  • Run out patient clinics for different Oncology and Haematology specialities- working with the wider Oncology and Haematology MDT members
  • Perform Weight, BP, Pulse, Saturations, Respiration Rate, Temperature on patients at arrival and reporting and abnormal readings to Registered staff, this both in the Outpatients department and also within the Chemotherapy Unit.
  • Work as part of the multidisciplinary team ensuring the delivery of a high standard of care to the patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To welcome patients and their families who have received sensitive and complex information showing empathy.
  • Performing procedures - Teaching will be given to the successful individual to be come competent in Venesections and PICC line care, the applicant will also be assisting with bone marrow biopsy's weekly.
  • To maintain a safe environment for patients and staff within the department at all times and take appropriate action to achieve this.
  • To be competent in the use of the computer systems: Chemo Care and Alex Health - Training will be given to the successful applicant
  • To be aware of own limitation and emotional effort needed
  • Maintain own personal development and ensure own educational needs are met.
  • To assist in the smooth running of the department in ensuring that the treatments are organised and delivered appropriately with liaison of relevant departments, i.e. pharmacy. Collecting blood from the blood transfusion department after working along side the Blood Link for the area.
  • Maintain appropriate patient and clinical records in line with the Trusts polices
  • Ensure that all patients, clients and colleagues are treated at all times in an equitable manner, respecting diversity and showing an understanding of diversity in the workplace.
  • To maintain a safe environment for patients and staff within the department at all times and take appropriate action to achieve this.
