Purpose of the Role

The Prison Support Worker will work alongside the Prison Ministry Project Lead to deliver Imago Dei's prison ministry across women's prisons in Kent & Surrey.

The role is focused on building positive relationships with women in custody through facilitating rehabilitative programmes, offering pastoral and spiritual encouragement and supporting women to discover their worth, identity and potential.

Alongside programme delivery, the post holder will provide essential administrative support to ensure the effective planning, monitoring and evaluation of prison projects while helping to develop and support our growing team of prison volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

Prison Programme Delivery

• Facilitate Imago Dei's personal development, wellbeing and faith-based courses within women's prisons.
• Create safe, supportive and engaging learning environments.
• Encourage women to recognise their worth, value and potential.
• Promote hope, resilience and positive change through all programme delivery.
• Support women in setting achievable personal goals.
• Work alongside prison staff and chaplaincy teams to ensure effective delivery.

Pastoral and Spiritual Support

• Build trusting and professional relationships with women in custody.
• Offer compassionate pastoral support appropriate to individual needs.
• Encourage women in their personal growth and wellbeing.
• Provide spiritual encouragement where appropriate and in line with prison chaplaincy procedures.
• Demonstrate Christ-like compassion, grace and respect in all interactions.

Administration and Programme Coordination

• Maintain accurate participant records.
• Manage course waiting lists and attendance registers.
• Collect participant feedback and evaluation forms.
• Input and maintain monitoring data.
• Assist with analysing programme outcomes and impact data
• Produce reports for internal monitoring and funding requirements.
• Ensure resources are prepared and available before each course.
• Collate and organise teaching materials and course resources.

Volunteer Support

• Assist the Prison Ministry Project Lead in recruiting and developing prison volunteers.
• Help coordinate volunteer rotas where appropriate.
• Encourage, support and communicate regularly with volunteers.
• Assist with volunteer induction, training and ongoing development.
• Promote a positive and supportive volunteer culture.

Partnership working

Build positive working relationships with prison staff, chaplaincy teams and partner organisations.

• Represent Imago Dei professionally at all times.
• Ensure all safeguarding, prison security and confidentiality procedures are followed.

Essential

• A genuine passion for supporting women in prison.

• Ability to facilitate groups with confidence and sensitivity.
• Strong organisational and administrative skills.
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and within a small team.
• An understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
• Willingness to obtain and maintain prison security clearance.
• Car essential.

Desirable

• Experience working within prisons or the criminal justice system.
• Experience facilitating training, courses or group work.
• Experience of pastoral care, mentoring or supporting vulnerable adults.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practice.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively support and uphold the Christian ethos, values and mission of the charity in both attitude and practice. There is a Genuine Occupational Requirement under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010 for the post holder to be a practising Christian who is able to actively promote and represent the Christian ethos of Imago Dei.
