Full job description

Production Operative

Salary: Competitive. The range depends on experience and your role within the team.

Pelta Medical Papers is a leading manufacturer of high-quality, medical-grade paper used worldwide in healthcare, sterilisation, and laboratory environments. The difference between a product that protects a sterile medical device and one that fails is made on the machine, shift after shift, reel after reel, by the people running it. A paper machine does not run itself. It needs operators who watch it closely, understand what it is telling them, and act before a small drift becomes a defect or a break. The consistency and quality our customers depend on is, in the end, made by our production team. We are now looking for intelligent, capable Production Operatives to join that team and take real ownership of what comes off the machine.

We are seeking experienced operatives from a papermaking or manufacturing background who want to do the job properly: people who take pride in a clean run, a good reel, and a shift with no surprises. This is a hands-on role at the heart of the operation. You will work as part of a shift team, running and monitoring the paper machines and the processes around them, working closely with shift managers, engineers, and the quality team.

Working closely with our experienced team, you will:

  • Operate and monitor the paper machines and associated equipment safely and to specification throughout your shift.
  • Watch the process closely, from the wet end through to the dry end and winding, and respond quickly and sensibly to changes, breaks, and out-of-spec conditions.
  • Carry out grade changes and start-ups and shut-downs in line with procedures.
  • Take in-process samples and basic measurements, record data accurately, and flag anything that doesn't look right.
  • Handle, label, and move reels and materials correctly, keeping the product clean and protected. Contamination control matters in everything we make.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping and 5S across your area. In a medical-grade environment, cleanliness is part of the job, not an afterthought.
  • Follow all health, safety, and quality procedures rigorously, and look out for your own safety and that of your colleagues.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement. You are closest to the machine, so your observations on how to run it better are genuinely valued.

Essential requirements:

  • Hands-on experience in papermaking or in a manufacturing or industrial production environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and genuine comfort working with industrial machinery.
  • Sharp attention to detail and a real quality mindset. You notice when something is off.
  • Sound practical numeracy: able to read gauges and instruments, take measurements, and record data accurately.
  • Reliability and a strong attendance and timekeeping record. A shift team depends on everyone turning up.
  • Willingness and ability to work a shift pattern, including nights and weekends.
  • Physically able to carry out the role, including standing for extended periods and some manual handling.
  • A team player who communicates clearly with colleagues across shifts and departments.

Desirable:

  • Direct experience operating a paper machine.
  • Forklift or FLT licence.
  • Exposure to continuous improvement, lean, or 5S in a previous role.
