Full job description

Role Purpose

To carry out street cleansing and environmental maintenance duties, ensuring public areas are kept clean, safe and welcoming for residents and visitors.

The role includes litter picking, sweeping, bin emptying, removal of minor fly-tipping, reporting issues and supporting the Council in maintaining a high-quality public environment.

Hours of Work

20 hours per week, normally worked Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 12:00 noon.

The postholder may be required to work weekends, Bank Holidays or additional hours to support Council events, seasonal demands, emergencies or operational requirements. Where such additional hours are worked, Time Off in Lieu (TOIL) will be granted in accordance with the Council's policies and operational requirements.

Location

Throughout the Town Council area, including streets, footways, public open spaces, parks, seafront areas and other land and facilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep streets, footpaths and public areas clean and tidy.
  • Pick up litter, weeds, leaves and other rubbish.
  • Empty litter and dog waste bins.
  • Remove small amounts of fly-tipping and report larger incidents.
  • Help with seasonal clean-ups and special projects.
  • Drive Council vehicles as required.
  • Take collected waste to approved recycling or waste disposal sites.
  • Report graffiti, vandalism, damaged street furniture and other issues.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe and welcoming environment across the town.
  • Use tools, equipment and machinery safely.
  • Keep equipment clean and report any faults or damage.
  • Be polite and helpful when dealing with members of the public.
  • Follow Health and Safety procedures and wear the required PPE.
  • Report accidents, incidents and hazards promptly.
  • Complete timesheets and other records as required.
  • Attend training and team meetings when required.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively as part of the Council team.
  • Carry out other reasonable duties as directed by the Town Clerk or Lead Operative.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The job is mainly outdoors and requires working in all types of weather.
  • The role involves walking, bending, lifting and other physical work.
  • You will work in public areas and may regularly interact with members of the public.
  • Some flexibility is required to support Council events, busy periods and emergency situations.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications

  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Experience

  • Experience in street cleansing, grounds maintenance or similar services.
  • Experience of working as part of a team.
  • Experience of operating tools and equipment safely.
  • Experience driving vans, tipper trucks, or other light commercial vehicles.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage workload effectively.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Good awareness of safe working practices.
