Job Purpose:

· To carry out day to day maintenance on the fabric of the building, it’s services and grounds to ensure that the Home is maintained in a safe, efficient, and functional order.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:

· Previous experience in a similar role within a Care Home environment preferred.

Principal Responsibilities:

General Maintenance & Repairs

· Carry out general maintenance and repairs throughout the home as required.

· Ensure the home is maintained in a good decorative order internally and externally.

· Undertake routine inspections and solve day-to-day maintenance issues proactively.

· Maintain the home’s exterior, ensuring external areas and grounds are tidy, safe, and well-presented at all times.

· Assist with moving furniture and equipment as directed by the Home Manager.

Water & Heating Systems

· Carry out statutory testing of water services in line with current legislation and company policy.

· Undertake Legionella testing, TMV checks, and maintain water filtration and softener systems.

· Ensure boilers are operating correctly and room temperatures are seasonally adjusted.

· Support the checks and maintenance of the home's hot and cold water plant systems, and any backup generators (if applicable).

Electrical Equipment & Compliance

· Test and inspect portable electrical appliances, including those brought in by residents or visitors, ensuring they are PAT tested and safe for use.

· Maintain up-to-date PAT testing records and ensure a PAT testing action plan is in place.

· Ensure all electrical equipment is periodically maintained and records of calibration certificates are held.

Tools, Equipment & Contractor Supervision

· Maintain tools and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure condition.

· Keep an up-to-date inventory of maintenance tools and equipment.

· Supervise external contractors, ensuring they are inducted, follow site rules, and use permit-to-work systems where applicable.

· Ensure contractors comply with the asbestos register and site-specific safety procedures.

Fire Safety

· Support the implementation and maintenance of fire safety measures in accordance with the home’s fire risk assessment and relevant legislation.

· Conduct regular visual checks of fire doors, extinguishers, emergency lighting and fire alarm systems, and report faults promptly.

· Assist with weekly fire alarm testing and monthly fire safety checks, maintaining appropriate records.

· Participate in and support scheduled fire evacuation drills, ensuring safe procedures are followed and assisting residents and staff as required.

· Ensure escape routes and exits are clearly marked, accessible, and kept free from obstruction at all times.

· Work collaboratively with the Home Manager and Health & Safety Lead to address any fire safety concerns identified during audits or inspections.

· Maintain awareness of and comply with the home’s fire procedures, including responsibilities in the event of an emergency evacuation.

On-call & Emergency Response

· Be available for emergency call-outs and provide telephone advice when off duty, ensuring a prompt response to maintain safety and operations. Hours worked will be paid accordingly.

· Liaise with contractors and escalate urgent issues to the Home Manager or Head of Facilities and Maintenance.

Grounds & External Maintenance

· Maintain grounds, including cutting grass, pruning shrubs and hedges, removing weeds, and litter picking.

· Grit pathways and car parks in adverse weather.

· Carry out jet washing as required to maintain external cleanliness and safety.

Record Keeping & Monitoring

· Complete and maintain accurate documentation for all maintenance activities.

· Keep service contract records up to date (e.g. PUWER, LOLER).

· Monitor energy consumption, keeping written records to help minimise costs.

Waste & Storage Management

· Follow the company’s waste disposal policy, prepare bins for collection, and maintain the cleanliness of waste areas.

· Ensure storage areas are clean, tidy, and secure at all times.

· Assist with receiving fuel deliveries and cess-pit waste removal, where required.

Resident & Team Support

· Work collaboratively with housekeeping, catering, and other departments to ensure compliance and high standards are met.

· Assist with resident engagement activities and events (e.g. BBQs, garden parties) as requested by the Home Manager.

· Drive the minibus or other vehicles for resident outings when required (where relevant and licensed).

· Ensure residents’ privacy, dignity, and rights are upheld while carrying out duties in their living spaces.

Training & Company Standards

· Attend all mandatory and in-house training sessions, including statutory requirements such as manual handling.

· Understand and comply with all company policies and procedures.

· Maintain competence in using IT systems and handheld compliance devices.

· Immediately report any infectious illness or accident affecting yourself, a colleague, resident, or visitor to the Home Manager.

Safeguarding & Welfare

· Protect the welfare of all residents by adhering to safeguarding policies.

· Report any concerns related to abuse, neglect, or safety in accordance with company procedures.

· Promote a safe, secure, and supportive environment for all individuals within the home.

Health & Safety Compliance

Be conversant with and ensure all staff are aware of the requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and of their compliance. Advise the Manager of any areas of concern.

· Fully understand and implement the Health & Safety policy, including Emergency and Fire Procedures.

· Ensure regular testing and record-keeping for:

· Fire alarms (weekly)

· Emergency lighting

· Nurse call systems

· Fire extinguishers

· Room redecoration

· Ladder safety checks

· Domestic hot water temperatures and heat emitter surfaces

· Monitor all entrances and fire exits to ensure they remain unobstructed.

· Record and report all incidents and accidents promptly as per company policy.

· Assist in implementing risk management actions as instructed by the Home Manager.

Pay: £16.99 per hour

Expected hours: 37.25 per week
