Full job description

Fabrican Ltd is a leading chemical engineering technology company with an exciting opportunity for a Research Technician on a temporary basis with the possibility of becoming permanent. Based at the London Bioscience Innovation Centre, the Research Technician will be an instrumental member of the R&D team developing commercial product applications for Fabrican’s innovative Spray-on fabric technology.

In this hands-on role, the Research Technician will support the R&D team formulating compounds as directed, using lab equipment such as compressed air sprayers and magnetic stirrers, maintaining meticulous records of work, and participating in technical meetings as required. Utilising a high level of chemistry ability, the Research Technician will creatively approach the production and testing of a range of materials and application methods.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate his or her ability to

  • Be able to work independently, using initiative and technical expertise in a proactive manner to solve problems
  • Be able to contribute to team discussions and work collaboratively
  • Be able to operate the lab in an efficient manner, and maintain a safe and tidy working environment
  • Be able to mix components of formulations together
  • Be able to participate in technical discussions with clients, perhaps in the setting of a teleconference or face-to-face meeting
  • Be able to use lab equipment like spray guns, airbrushes, aerosol fillers, milling machines, magnetic stirrers, scales, viscometers, and calipers proficiently and accurately
  • Be able to write technical and client reports
  • Be able to file data daily and maintain organised lab records
  • Be able to work in a subordinate role to managers and directors
  • Be able to provide administrative support as required

Required experience and skills

  • Good materials science/chemical engineering/chemistry degree
  • 1+ years of experience in a chemical engineering/polymer science research or industrial setting
  • Knowledge of process principles and polymer formulations
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures (MSDS, hazard codes) and commitment to promoting a health and safety culture
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint literacy

Desirable experience and skills

  • Experience working in waterborne polyurethane and polyurethane chemistry
  • Knowledge of screen printing processes
  • Experience using compressed air sprayers
