Assistant Chef

Location: Pennells Garden Centre Restaurant Sleaford
Reports To: Head Chef / Restaurant Manager
Hours: 37 hours per week on a two-week rotating rota, including alternate weekends.

Working PatternWeek 1

  • Monday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Tuesday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Wednesday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Thursday: Off
  • Friday: 10:00am - 4:00pm
  • Saturday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Sunday: 8:00am - 4:30pm

Week 2

  • Monday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Tuesday: Off
  • Wednesday: 10:00am - 4:00pm
  • Thursday: 8:00am - 4:30pm
  • Friday: 10:00am - 4:00pm

Job Purpose

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Chef to join our busy restaurant team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys preparing fresh food, working in a fast-paced environment, and developing their culinary skills. The successful candidate will support the Head Chef in the day-to-day running of the kitchen and will be trained to provide cover during holidays and sickness absence when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and cooking of breakfasts, lunches, daily specials, cakes and other menu items.
  • Support the Head Chef in maintaining high standards of food quality and presentation.
  • Ensure food is prepared and served in line with company standards.
  • Help maintain excellent levels of cleanliness, hygiene and food safety.
  • Assist with stock rotation, stock control and ordering.
  • Minimise food waste and promote efficient kitchen practices.
  • Work effectively as part of the kitchen and wider restaurant team.
  • Support menu development and seasonal specials.
  • Learn all aspects of kitchen operations to provide cover for the Head Chef when required.

Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a kitchen, catering or food preparation role preferred.
  • Passion for producing fresh, high-quality food.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work calmly and efficiently in a busy environment.
  • Reliable, hardworking and flexible approach to work.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Food Hygiene Certificate desirable but not essential.
