School Nurse - Band 5

Start date: 1st September 2026

Salary: £20,166.70 per annum actual salary, FTE £32,294.54 per annum

Working hours: 34 weeks per year plus INSET days

Monday 08:00 - 18:00

Tuesday 08:00 - 18:00

Wednesday 08:00 - 18:00

Plus 6 Saturdays per year 08:30 - 12:30

Overview of the Role:

To provide a clinically effective, high-quality service of nursing care to pupils and first aid care to the school community. The post holder is expected to work in partnership with pupils, parents, School personnel, GPs and other appropriate agencies to carry out health surveillance, health promotion and other public health initiatives and will ideally be experienced in working at NHS Band 6.

This position requires excellent communication and team working skills.

Responsibilities:

Professional

  • To practice at all times within the Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) Code of Professional
  • Conduct and be conversant with the Scope of Professional Practice and other NMC advisory papers.
  • Maintain Registered Nurse status and adhere to the requirements of PREP.
  • Operate under the guidance of best practice, as dictated by local and national policies, including child protection.
  • To use evidence based practice to maintain a high level of nursing care for pupils.
  • To ensure that a code of confidentiality is adhered to.
  • To contribute to the smooth and efficient running of the Health Centre under the direction of the nurse manager.
  • To assist with development of projects, policies and protocols relevant to health.

Nursing

  • To provide a high standard of service within NMC guidelines to pupils, staff and visitors.
  • To deliver first aid and emergency care as necessary.
  • To assist senior nurses in the development and delivery of nurse-run clinics.
  • To provide confidential advice and support to pupils, including referral and/or signpost to alternate services that may be of assistance to pupils.
  • With guidance, ensure care plans are written for those pupils with medical needs and ensure that this information is disseminated among appropriate staff.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Nurse, assess, implement and evaluate in-patient care of pupils admitted to the Sanatorium.
  • To provide support to the MO during clinic times, under their direction.
  • To carry out child and adolescent surveillance programmes in conjunction with the rest of the nursing team.
  • To follow directions on immunisation procedures relevant to the school population and individuals.
  • To operate procedures for the control of infectious diseases and to practice within Universal Precautions.
  • To hold and issue medications to pupils, maintaining safe storage usage and disposal.
  • To organise doctors’ surgeries, including advising pupils to attend and referring to MO as appropriate.
  • To arrange for boarding pupils to attend any medical, dental or other health appointments as necessary.
  • To maintain treatment room stock, hygiene and tidiness.
  • To assist in the maintenance and restocking of the Schools’ first aid kits
  • To assist in the training/updating of boarding staff regarding school medicine policy and other health related policies

Health Promotions

  • To promote health education throughout the school utilising opportunities to deliver information to pupils/staff.
  • To keep up-to-date with current health promotion initiatives.
  • To ensure the provision of and access to a range of publicity materials on issues relating to pupil health.

Administrative

  • To ensure appropriate paperwork and records, following NMC Code, are completed.
  • To keep nursing records to a high standard ensuring the accurate and rapid retrieval of information.
  • To participate in audits as required.
  • To record dispensing of drugs following drug protocol.
  • To maintain accurate records of pupils that self-administer medicine.
  • To maintain general office procedures.

Health and Safety

  • To have an awareness of health and safety issues within the school affecting staff, children or the environment.

Liaison

  • To communicate to the Senior Nurse areas of concern/for development
  • To liaise with school nurses and other practitioners to facilitate national programmes e.g. immunisations.
  • To work closely with other members of the Health Centre team to ensure seamless and continuous care.
  • To liaise with members of staff and parents regarding pupils’ health and wellbeing.
  • To attend meetings as required.

Person specification

Knowledge/qualifications:

Essential

  • Registered Nurse, evidence of professional updating

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of providing first aid and the care of children with chronic illnesses

Personal circumstances

Skills and Abilities/Experience

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in an effective way

Culford School is a boarding and day school for over 850 children aged 1 to 18, set in 480 acres of beautiful Suffolk parkland, with an 18th century grade II mansion at its centre and three separate schools: the Pre-Prep & Nursery (ages 1 to 7); the Prep (ages 7 to 13); and the Senior School (ages 13 to 18).

The purpose-built Health Centre has a six bedded Sanatorium which is utilised when pupils require isolation from the boarding houses due to ill health. The Health Centre is staffed by a team which includes nurses, HCA’s and an Administrator, in addition a local GP provides support as the School Medical Officer. There are two GP clinics held each week in addition to drop-in clinics led by the nurse throughout the day. The school counsellor’s holds sessions twice a week at the Health Centre. The school also utilises the services of a local clinical psychologist as needed.
