Want to create safer, healthier and more welcoming streets for everyone?
About The Team & Role:
Gloucestershire County Council is seeking an ambitious, forward-thinking Road Safety Manager to lead its flagship programme. This is a unique opportunity to deliver large-scale change: reducing casualties, enabling active travel and helping us achieve our Vision Zero ambition.
You’ll lead a multidisciplinary team and work closely with partners like Police, Fire and Rescue, Public Health and National Highways. Key responsibilities include delivering Safer Roads and Community 20mph schemes across 150+ communities, overseeing the annual collision reduction programme, deploying average speed cameras and, using data, AI and behavioural insight to improve safety outcomes.
This is a key leadership role, influencing major projects like the Cycle Spine, and Bus Service Improvement Plan and active travel infrastructure, helping shape a safer, more sustainable network. This work is critical to achieving national road safety targets by 2035 and progressing Vision Zero by 2050, while delivering tangible benefits to communities across Gloucestershire. In return, you’ll have the opportunity to lead high-impact programmes and grow your career in a forward-thinking environment.
About You:
We’re looking for a confident, resilient leader with a passion for road safety and community impact. You champion the Safe System approach and key programmes, using engineering, data and behavioural insight to ensure investment is well-targeted and outcomes are delivered. You excel at bringing people together and managing delivery in a complex, political environment. You’ll build trusted relationships with Members, partners and stakeholders.
Curiosity and openness to new ideas, along with the ability to use data and digital tools, are essential. Whether you bring experience in road safety, highways or another related field, transferable skills and a willingness to grow are equally valued. You’ll be fully supported to develop and thrive in this exciting leadership opportunity.
About us:
As you’d expect, we offer an attractive package of benefits which makes a career in Local Government both flexible and rewarding.
Hybrid working arrangements are available for many of our roles, giving teams the opportunity to work in a way that suits them, balancing service need and individual choice, with a mix of both remote and office working.
For all your hard work, you will receive the following:
- Flexible and agile working opportunities
- 30 days annual leave
- An option to purchase 10 days of additional leave per year (pro rata for part-time staff)
- Family friendly employer offering benefits to help support you and your family
- Career development and qualification opportunities
- Supportive and positive working environment with regular, robust supervision
- A generous Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
- Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) providing free, confidential, counselling and advice
- An in-house Occupational Health service
- Employee discount scheme
- Cycle to Work and Green Car salary sacrifice schemes
- Employee networks such as Prism (LGBT+) and Young Employees Network
