Carpenter’s Mate

Learn all aspects of Joinery and assist in the delivery of an effective and efficient responsive repairs service.

Learn to carry out all aspects of Joinery:

· Deglaze/ Reglaze timber fencing and gates

Typical Working Week

You will work on site for four days per week and attend college for one day a week. Most site hours are Monday to Friday, 07.30-16.30.

Job Role Responsibilities

As a carpenter’s mate you will assist the carpenter to perform series requiring less skills Duties include using, or holding materials, tolls and cleaning work area and equipment.

  • clean work areas, machines, or equipment, to maintain a clean and safe job site.
  • Select tools, equipment, or materials from storage and transport items to work site.
  • Fasten timbers or lumber with glue, screws, pegs, or nails and install hardware.
  • Cut timbers, lumber, or paneling to specified dimensions.
  • Drill holes in timbers or lumber.
  • Position and hold timbers, lumber, or paneling in place for fastening or cutting.
  • Smooth or sand surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking.
  • Align, straighten, plumb, or square forms for installation.
  • Erect scaffolding, shoring, or braces.
  • Hold plumb bobs, sighting rods, or other equipment to aid in establishing reference points and lines.
  • Glue and clamp edges or joints of assembled parts.
  • Perform tie spacing layout and measure, mark, drill or cut.
  • Secure stakes to grids for constructions of footings, nail scabs to footing forms, and vibrate and float concrete.
  • Construct forms and assist in raising them to the required elevation.
  • Install handrails under the direction of a carpenter.
  • Cut and install insulating or sound-absorbing material.
  • Cut tile or linoleum to fit and spread adhesives on flooring for installation.
  • Cover surfaces with laminated plastic covering material.

· To become a carpenter or joiner you will need to have an eye for detail. You will also need good maths skills for measuring and working out angles. As a carpenter you’ll need to follow technical drawings and plans.

· To become a carpenter or joiner, you may work in one or more of the following areas, and as carpenters mate you will support the carpenter in the following areas :

· cutting and shaping timber for floorboards, skirting boards and window frames

· making and assembling doors, window frames, staircases and fitted furniture

· fitting wooden structures, like floor and roof joists, roof timbers, staircases, partition walls, and door and window frames (first fixings)

· Installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, cupboards and shelving, as well as door handles and locks (second fixings)

· building temporary wooden supports for concrete that is setting

· making and fitting interiors for residential properties.

· Repair/ renew ceiling and floor joists, stairs, studding, partition walls, T&G or sheet flooring

· Repair/ renew doors and door casing, skirting, handrails, balustrades, pipe boards and ducting panelling

· Repair/ renew kitchen units, work tops and decorative finishes

· Repair/ replace ironmongery to doors and windows

Person Specification

Ideally you would have completed or be due to complete your year 2 apprenticeship stage as a minimum and work well within a team

GCSEs or equivalent in Math's and English. Some understanding of the importance of Health & Safety in the workplace.
