Full job description
Hours Part-time · weekends plus evening event shifts
Salary - · £13.45 per hour - Living wage employer
Be at the heart of one of Whitstable's busiest community spaces
The Umbrella Centre is a community venue in the heart of Whitstable, run by a local charity. On any given week you might find a market, a dance class, a fundraiser, a birthday party or a live music night going on under our roof.
Two roles, one person - Caretaker & Bar Supervisor
This job is as varied as the building itself. You'll be the person who knows the centre inside out. You'll get the space ready, keep it looking its best and then run the bar when the doors open and the event gets going. You'll see every event from set-up to lock-up and be part of everything that happens here.
Your weekends give the job a steady backbone, and the bar shifts follow our events calendar. Some weeks are packed, others are quieter, and that rhythm is part of the job. It suits someone who enjoys variety and wants work that fits around the rest of their life. You'll get your bar shifts in advance.
Bar Responsibilities
You'll supervise the bar at our events, working alongside casual bar staff and volunteers. That means making sure the bar is set up, stocked and running well on the night, keeping the team on track and giving our guests a warm welcome. Bar experience would be great but full training will be given.
Caretaking Responsibilities
- Setting up and packing down for everything from weekend markets to birthday parties
- Cleaning after events, including sweeping, mopping, toilets and the kitchen
- General maintenance and small repairs, and flagging bigger jobs when they come up
Working Hours - Caretaker & Bar Supervisor
- Caretaking every weekend, Fri - Sun
- Bar shifts for events, which vary week to week
- Late nights, as events can finish late and need clearing down afterwards
- Occasional early mornings to set up for daytime events and markets
Who makes a great Caretaker & Bar Supervisor?
- Organised, and able to keep a few plates spinning at once
- Confident leading a small team and friendly with the public
- Happy to get stuck in and roll your sleeves up
- Comfortable with variety and doesn't need every week to look the same
- Handy with basic DIY
Ideal experience for this Caretaker & Bar Supervisor role
- Experience in a caretaker, facilities, hospitality, events or similar hands-on role
- Experience supervising or leading a small team
- Comfortable working behind a bar and supporting events
- Experience opening, closing and securing a building
- Confident carrying out basic maintenance and DIY tasks
- Comfortable dealing with members of the public and resolving problems as they arise
- Experience working independently and using your own initiative
You don't need to have done this exact role before. We're more interested in finding someone with the right mix of practical experience, people skills and a willingness to get stuck in.
If you'd like to be at the heart of one of Whitstable's busiest community spaces, we'd love to hear from you.
