Location: Honister Pass, Lake District
Sector: High-end Residential & Commercial Stone Projects

Join a Unique Craft at England’s Last Working Slate Mine

Honister Slate Mine isn’t just a workplace — it’s a piece of living history. As England’s last working slate mine, we produce world-renowned, premium-quality slate using skills passed down through generations. Our slate is used in prestigious residential and commercial projects across the UK, making this an incredible opportunity to learn a rare, highly respected craft.

We are now looking for a motivated, reliable, and hands-on individual to join our friendly production team, manufacturing high-quality roofing slate.

Why This Role Is Special

  • Full training in a rare, traditional craft — no previous slate experience required.
  • Become part of an industry only a handful of people in the UK work in.
  • Work in a spectacular Lake District environment every day.
  • Be part of a tight-knit, supportive team that values skill, quality, and pride in craftsmanship.
  • Real opportunities to grow your skills and take on more responsibility.

If you are looking for a job that is more than just a job — something meaningful, practical, and uniquely skilled — this could be the perfect fit.

About the Role

As a Roofing Slate Maker, you will learn how to split, cut, and shape slate using traditional techniques. It’s a skilled craft that requires patience, commitment, and attention to detail — but once mastered, it becomes a lifelong skill with real value.

You will:

  • Work within a team producing high-end roofing slate.
  • Learn specialist slate-making methods from experienced craftsmen.
  • Help maintain high production standards and quality control.
  • Contribute to the supply of slate used in beautiful buildings across the UK.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment where reliability and teamwork matter.

We’re Looking For Someone Who Is:

  • Hard-working, enthusiastic, and eager to learn.
  • Able to work under pressure while maintaining high standards.
  • Positive, helpful, and team-focused.
  • Comfortable working with their hands and learning practical skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage tasks independently.

Experience with slate, stone, carpentry, or woodwork is a bonus, but not essential, as full training is provided.

Requirements

  • A valid UK driving licence held for at least two years.
  • Willingness to attend a demonstration work day as part of the interview process.
  • Good level of physical fitness suitable for hands-on work.

Take the First Step Into a One-of-a-Kind Career
