Full job description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Project Counsellor to join our Children and Young People's service, providing therapeutic support to young people aged 11-25 years. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dedicated team that empowers young people to improve their emotional wellbeing, build resilience, reduce risk-taking behaviours, and achieve positive life outcomes.

This is a part-time, fixed-term, contracted at 30 hours per week until May 2027

This role is not eligible for sponsorship as is does not meet the requirements as set out by the UK Visa and Immigration Service

About the role

As a Project Counsellor, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team delivering high-quality counselling and therapeutic interventions tailored to the individual needs of young people. You'll provide support through a range of delivery methods, including face-to-face sessions, video appointments, telephone support, and digital communication platforms, ensuring services remain accessible and responsive to young people's needs.

You will undertake assessments, develop therapeutic plans, and deliver interventions that promote positive mental health and emotional wellbeing. This will include supporting young people experiencing a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, low mood, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, trauma, relationship difficulties, and other emotional and mental health concerns.

Alongside direct therapeutic work, you will play an active role in promoting mental health awareness within the community. This may include delivering workshops, presentations, outreach activities and contributing to service development initiatives that help improve outcomes for young people.

The successful candidate will also work closely with families, carers, schools, social care teams, and other partner organisations where appropriate, ensuring young people receive coordinated and holistic support.

About you

We are looking for a passionate and skilled counsellor who is committed to improving the lives of children and young people.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A minimum Level 5 Diploma in Counselling or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Accreditation with BACP, UKCP, or an equivalent recognised professional body, or be actively working towards accreditation.
  • Significant post-qualification experience providing counselling or psychotherapy using a range of therapeutic approaches.
  • Experience working with young people aged 11-25 and an understanding of the challenges affecting their mental health and wellbeing.
  • Experience assessing risk and supporting young people who may self-harm or experience suicidal thoughts and feelings.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding, confidentiality, and professional practice standards
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage young people in a compassionate, non-judgmental and person-centered manner.
