Are you a practical, hands-on problem solver who takes pride in keeping buildings safe, well maintained, and operating at their best?
Do you enjoy fixing things, improving environments, and making a real difference every day?
If so, we'd love to hear from you.
At The Old School House Nursery & Pre-School, we believe children thrive when they learn and play in exceptional environments. We are seeking an enthusiastic, proactive, and highly organised Site Manager & Health and Safety Lead to oversee the maintenance, safety, security, and operational management of our two nursery sites.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone with practical building maintenance experience who enjoys a varied role combining hands-on repairs, site management, and health and safety leadership.
About the Role
As our Site Manager & Health and Safety Lead, you will be responsible for ensuring both nursery sites are safe, secure, compliant, and maintained to the highest standards.
This is a hands-on role. Whilst you will coordinate contractors and larger maintenance projects, you will also be expected to carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and improvements yourself wherever appropriate.
From fixing a gate, repairing fixtures and fittings, carrying out decorating, or resolving day-to-day maintenance issues, you will take pride in ensuring our nursery environments remain welcoming, safe, and inspiring places for children, families, and staff.
Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, you will help shape and continually improve our nursery environments while ensuring all statutory and regulatory requirements are met.
Please note: This role involves regular travel between our nursery locations. A full UK driving licence with a clean driving record is essential. A company vehicle will be provided for business use.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Management & Maintenance
- Lead the day-to-day maintenance and presentation of both nursery sites.
- Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and improvement works across both settings.
- Undertake minor plumbing, carpentry, decorating, painting, and general building maintenance tasks.
- Ensure buildings, grounds, play areas, and facilities are safe, attractive, and fit for purpose.
- Identify maintenance issues proactively and resolve them before they become larger problems.
- Coordinate repairs, servicing, and planned preventative maintenance programmes.
- Manage contractors and external service providers, ensuring work is completed safely and to a high standard.
- Oversee site security, including alarms, access controls, and key holder responsibilities.
- Monitor maintenance expenditure and support cost-effective site management.
- Maintain equipment, fixtures, fittings, furniture, and outdoor areas in good working order.
Health & Safety Leadership
- Act as the designated Health and Safety Lead across both nursery settings.
- Develop, implement, and review health and safety policies, procedures, and risk assessments.
- Lead fire safety management, emergency planning, and evacuation procedures.
- Conduct audits, inspections, and compliance checks.
- Maintain statutory records and compliance documentation.
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, implementing corrective actions where necessary.
- Promote a positive culture of health, safety, and wellbeing throughout the organisation.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, Ofsted requirements, and best practice guidance.
Operational Support
- Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team to support operational planning and continuous improvement.
- Respond promptly to maintenance issues and emergency situations.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, sustainability, and site performance.
- Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role.
About You
We are looking for someone who is:
- Practical, hands-on, and takes pride in their work.
- Organised, reliable, and self-motivated.
- A proactive problem solver who can work independently.
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities and projects.
- Committed to maintaining high standards and continuous improvement.
- Friendly and approachable, with excellent communication skills.
Essential Requirements
- Experience in site, facilities, premises, estates, property, or building maintenance management.
- Strong practical skills in general building maintenance and repairs.
- Experience carrying out routine maintenance tasks and resolving site issues independently.
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, decorating, painting, and general DIY/building maintenance.
- Ability to identify maintenance issues and implement effective solutions.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation and compliance requirements.
- Experience carrying out risk assessments and managing contractor compliance.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence with a clean driving record.
- Ability to travel regularly between both nursery sites.
- Ability to act as a key holder and respond to emergencies when required.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- Experience within education, childcare, hospitality, or similar environments.
- First Aid qualification.
- Understanding of safeguarding requirements within educational settings.
What We Offer
- £36,000 annual salary
- Company vehicle provided for travel between sites
- A varied and rewarding role with autonomy and responsibility
- A supportive and welcoming team culture
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities
- The opportunity to make a meaningful difference every day
- The chance to help shape the future of two thriving nursery settings
