Job Summary

Prepare and install vinyl and safety flooring, particularly in bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms and other areas requiring durable, hygienic and slip-resistant finishes. Complete planned installations, repairs and replacements to the specification and manufacturer instructions, producing neat, secure finishes suitable for their intended use.

Duties & Responsibilities

· Review job instructions, drawings and flooring specifications; measure rooms and plan setting-out, seam positions and material quantities to minimise waste.

· Inspect the existing floor and substrate, checking condition, soundness, levels and moisture where required. Report defects, dampness or unsuitable conditions before laying flooring.

· Remove existing floor coverings and adhesive residues where authorised and safe. Stop work and report suspected asbestos-containing flooring or adhesives before disturbing them.

· Prepare and screed subfloors using specified repairs, primers, smoothing and levelling compounds, screeds and suitable plywood. Form levels or wet-room falls as specified, within competence; check curing and moisture before laying vinyl.

· Acclimatise materials and use compatible adhesives and preparation products, observing working times, site conditions and curing requirements.

· Cut, fit, bond and roll sheet vinyl and safety flooring, achieving accurate joins and clean finishes around cabinets, sanitary fittings, pipes and doorways.

· Form coved skirtings and fit cove formers, capping strips and trims. Groove and hot-weld seams where specified, including neat internal and external corners.

· Fit wet-room flooring to the specified falls and drain details, coordinating screeding and installation with the supervisor and other trades. Check upstands and drain connections; report pooling or unsuitable falls before handover.

· Fit thresholds, transitions and edge trims securely to avoid raised edges and trip hazards. Undertake flooring repairs and replacements with suitable matching materials where available.

· Inspect finished work for adhesion, seam quality, damage and defects; rectify snags, protect the floor during curing and provide agreed care and handover information.

Key Responsibilities

· Follow risk assessments, method statements, COSHH controls and site rules. Use suitable PPE and knee protection; control dust, fumes, sharp tools, hot welding equipment and manual handling risks.

· Keep work areas secure, tidy and safe for residents and other trades. Maintain safe access, protect belongings and explain restrictions while adhesives or finishes cure.

· Treat clients and residents courteously, respecting privacy and the needs of vulnerable occupants. Report safeguarding concerns through company procedures.

· Coordinate access, work sequencing and material requirements with the supervisor and office. Report delays, variations and additional work before proceeding.

· Complete accurate job records, photographs, material usage and snag reports using the company job management system. Maintain tools and report defects, incidents and near misses.

· Segregate and dispose of waste through approved arrangements. Carry out other reasonable duties relevant to the role and within competence; service disconnections remain with authorised trades.

Qualifications & Experience

· Education: A flooring apprenticeship or relevant SVQ/NVQ in floorcovering is desirable; equivalent demonstrable trade experience will be considered.

· Certification: Relevant CSCS card where required by the site or contract. Manufacturer training in safety flooring, hot welding and wet-room systems is desirable. A suitable valid driving licence is required where driving forms part of the role.

· Experience: Proven experience fitting sheet vinyl and safety flooring in bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms, including screeding, subfloor preparation, hot-welded seams and coved finishes. Occupied-property or social-housing experience is desirable.

· Knowledge: Understanding of screed and levelling systems, substrate suitability, moisture checks, drying and curing times, adhesive selection, seam detailing, drainage interfaces and manufacturer instructions.

· Skills: Accurate measuring and cutting, practical problem-solving, attention to detail, good communication and the ability to work independently and with other trades.

· Technology: Ability to use a smartphone or tablet for job updates, photographs and completion records.

Pay: From £18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 30.0 – 40.0 per week
