The Role

We are looking for a Senior Voice Application Engineer to join the team that builds and runs Eckoh’s Secure Voice platform containing Secure Voice Cloud, the Secure Voice Appliance and the Voice Engine.

We are looking for a Senior Voice Platform Engineer to join the team that builds and runs Eckoh’s Secure Voice platform — Secure Voice Cloud, the Secure Voice Appliance and the Voice Engine.

The platform is built on Kamailio, RTPengine and FreeSWITCH, running in AWS, mainly on EC2, with some Kubernetes-based APIs and supporting services. Kamailio is our primary signalling layer and we sit in the call path as a proxy — that architecture is the product, not an implementation detail. The role covers SIP signalling, RTP and media handling, call routing, IVR and application logic, platform configuration, scripting, debugging, observability, and integration with backend services and external contact-centre platforms.

You would be joining a small, senior, low-ceremony team with an unusual amount of ownership, working on problems that are genuinely hard — real-time media, carrier telephony, cloud-native services and payment security, all at the same time.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new functionality across the Secure Voice platform on Kamailio, RTPengine and FreeSWITCH — call flows, SIP routing, media handling, IVR behaviour, dialplans and platform configuration.
• Own the call and media path. SIP, RTP/RTCP, SDP, DTMF capture and suppression, codecs and transcoding, transfers, recording, and the routing logic behind them.
• Own the payment-security behaviour of the voice path. This is where cardholder data is at its most sensitive. You will design so that card numbers and CVV never reach a log, a recording, a transcript or a test environment — and be able to explain to an assessor how you know.
• Integrate voice with speech and conversational AI services. Speech-to-text, text-to-speech and the streaming, latency and turn-taking behaviour that decides whether an AI agent on a live call feels natural or unusable.
• Integrate with the outside world. Backend services, APIs, gateways, SIP trunks, CPaaS providers and contact-centre platforms such as Genesys, Amazon Connect or Twilio.
• Own the reliability of what you build. Observability, alerting, runbooks, incident response and post-incident learning are part of the job, not another team’s problem.
• Reduce single points of knowledge. Parts of this platform are understood by very few people. Documenting, testing and sharing what you learn is an explicit expectation of the role, not a nice-to-have.

Skills and requirements

Essential

• Production experience with our stack. Hands-on experience building, configuring or evolving production voice platforms using Kamailio, RTPengine and FreeSWITCH strong experience with at least two of the three.
• Real depth in SIP and media. SIP signalling, RTP/RTCP, SDP, DTMF, codecs and call routing, including diagnosing call-quality and media faults that reached customers.
• Hands-on development in Python, together with the configuration and scripting layer this platform runs on — Kamailio configuration, FreeSWITCH XML and dialplans, and Lua.
• Integration experience. Connecting voice platforms to speech-to-text, text-to-speech or conversational voice services, and to SIP trunks, CPaaS providers or contact-centre platforms.
• Linux and AWS in production, with the ownership that implies — EC2-based environments, observability, alerting, network troubleshooting and incident response.
• Demonstrable care about security and sensitive data in system design. PCI DSS experience is a significant advantage; the instinct is the requirement.

Desirable

• Go for backend services, platform tooling or integrations.
• C or C++, particularly in existing, real-time or performance-sensitive systems — we have a C++ estate you would help support.
• Speech-to-speech AI, real-time voice AI, conversational AI or agent-assist voice technologies.
• WebRTC, SRTP, DTLS, ICE, STUN/TURN or browser-based voice integration.
• Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code.
• Carrier and PSTN integration, session border controllers, and diagnosing voice quality in the field — jitter, packet loss, MOS.
• Payments experience: DTMF masking, tokenisation, or working inside PCI scope.
• Observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk or AWS CloudWatch.
• Contributions to open-source voice, security or backend engineering projects.
