Key Accountabilities
- Lead serious investigations with professionalism and integrity; identifying both immediate and underlying causes. Produce high¿quality, timely reports that clearly justify recommendations and support continuous improvement.
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with route¿based designated competent persons and investigators. Provide specialist advice, guidance, and knowledge¿sharing to help uplift investigation standards, enhance report quality, and embed best practices across teams.
- Manage and coordinate responses to queries and feedback relating to investigation reports, ensuring all information is appropriately considered, evaluated, and addressed.
- Develop constructive partnerships with external organisations, including other Railway Group Members. Represent Network Rail in a way that fosters trust, respect, and confidence in the investigations we lead.
- Coach, mentor, and support colleagues undertaking local accident investigations, contributing to their development and helping ensure recommendations are effectively implemented.
- Review and analyse a wide range of reports and emerging data to understand performance trends, assess assurance process effectiveness, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Produce clear, evidence¿based reviews and thematic reports using emerging trends, audit findings, and investigation outcomes¿drawing meaningful insights about safety, environmental management systems, and risk controls.
- Champion our culture principles , embedding fairness, openness, and a learning focused approach into all investigations and interactions.
- Carry out safety assurance and confidence measurement activities , including on site verification, either proactively based on emerging trends or as directed by the safety team.
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Essential
Must be a member of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) at Technical (TechIOSH) level or above
Detailed knowledge of investigation techniques and able to demonstrate their proper application
Good knowledge of railway operations, engineering, safety and environmental management
Good knowledge of health and safety legislation
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Logical thinker, with good analytical skills and computer operating skills
Desirable
Level 6 NEBOSH or Degree or equivalent
Good influencing skills
About the role
Salary : Band 4B £35,582- £42,218 plus Inner London Allowance £3,270

Your experience and skills
The ideal candidate is an experienced and credible investigator with strong technical knowledge of safety, environmental management, and railway operations. They demonstrate excellent analytical skills, with the ability to assess complex evidence, identify root causes, and produce clear, high¿quality reports with practical recommendations.
They are a confident communicator, capable of engaging with a wide range of stakeholders, building collaborative relationships, and influencing outcomes at all levels. A proactive and professional approach is essential, alongside the ability to manage competing priorities and respond effectively to feedback.
The candidate will have proven experience in investigation techniques, a good understanding of health and safety legislation, and be a member of IOSH (TechIOSH or above). They will also show a strong commitment to continuous improvement, learning, and embedding a fair and open safety culture.
Additionally, they will bring coaching and mentoring capability, supporting others to develop investigation standards and ensuring recommendations are effectively implemented.
