Multicat Vessel Master (Seagoing)

Job Purpose:

The Vessel Master will be responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of a UK-flagged Damen Multicat workboat engaged in a range of marine construction, towage and support operations.
The Master will hold the overriding authority and responsibility for the safety of the vessel, crew, third parties, cargo, and the environment, and is responsible for ensuring full compliance with:
- Applicable Maritime Legislation
- The Company Safety Management System (SMS)
- Applicable statutory and local harbour authority requirements

Key Responsibilities:
Command and Navigation
- Take Command of the vessel during allocated tours-of-duty.
- Ensure safe navigation, berthing, unberthing and maritime operations
- Plan and execute passages, harbour movements, towage, and worksite operations in accordance with COLREGs, local regulations, and approved plans.
- Ensure suitable and effective navigational watchkeeping is maintained on board as appropriate

Safety Management & Compliance
- Implement and enforce the Company Safety Management System onboard.
- Ensure vessel compliance with all legislative requirements.
- Conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments, and task specific briefings.
- Report accidents, incidents, near misses, and non conformities in accordance with company procedures.

Crew Management & Leadership
- Lead, manage, and motivate the vessel’s crew.
- Set a good example by demonstrating exemplary professionalism and seamanship throughout.
Ensure crew are:
- Appropriately certificated and competent
- Properly inducted and familiar with the vessel and operations
- Allocate duties and supervise work in a safe and seamanlike manner.
- Ensure compliance with hours of work and hours of rest requirements.

Operational Delivery
Safely conduct Multicat operations, including (but not limited to):
- Towage (harbour and coastal)
- Anchor handling and mooring operations
- Deck crane and lifting operations
- Support to diving, construction, or survey works
- Ensure operations are conducted in accordance with approved method statements, tow plans, and project documentation.

Key Skills & Competencies:
- Strong leadership and decision making skills
- Excellent situational awareness and risk management
- Clear communication with crew, clients, and shore-based staff
- Practical, hands on seamanship
- Calm and effective under pressure
- Strong safety culture and high professional standards

Qualifications & Experience:
This person will have a strong background in workboat operations, including operation of Multicat-type vessels.
They will have command experience in similar vessels, and experience managing a team on board.

The following qualifications are essential:

- MCA CoC: Master <500GT

- Current, valid, ENG1 Medical Fitness Certificate or equivalent

- Valid, Commercially Endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) or higher qualification as Master

Current, valid STCW Certificates for:
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting
- Personal Survival Techniques
- Elementary First Aid

The qualifications below are desirable:

- AEC 1 and AEC 2, STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness or GMDSS GOC

This person will be proficient in IT skills so they can effectively utilise the electronic Vessel Management Software, send and receive emails and carry out associated administrative tasks when necessary.

Additional Information
The usual operational area of the vessel is NW Europe including the UK and European Waters
