Practice Accountant

Location: Shirley, Solihull
Hours: 4 days per week – flexible working hours
Salary: £35,000 – £42,000 FTE, depending on experience

About the Role

We are a friendly and growing accountancy practice based in Shirley, Solihull, looking for an experienced Practice Accountant to join our team on a 4-day-per-week basis.

We are looking for a safe pair of hands — someone experienced, dependable and confident who can take ownership of their work and provide support to both our clients and the wider team.

This is a varied, hands-on role covering accounts preparation, tax returns, VAT returns and day-to-day client queries. You will also be expected to assist other members of the team with technical queries and provide guidance where required.

The successful candidate will be someone we can trust to get the job done accurately, efficiently and on time, with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Preparing year-end accounts for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies.
  • Preparing and submitting Self Assessment tax returns.
  • Preparing and submitting Corporation Tax returns.
  • Preparing and submitting VAT returns.
  • Managing a portfolio of clients and dealing with their day-to-day accounting and tax queries.
  • Liaising with HMRC where required.
  • Assisting other members of staff with accounting and tax queries.
  • Reviewing work completed by junior members of the team.
  • Identifying potential issues and raising them with the appropriate person.
  • Managing your own workload and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Maintaining strong and professional client relationships.
  • Keeping up to date with changes in UK accounting and tax legislation.

About You

We are looking for someone with solid practice experience who is confident in their ability and can hit the ground running.

You will ideally:

  • Have several years' experience working in a UK accountancy practice.
  • Have strong experience in accounts preparation, VAT and taxation.
  • Be confident preparing personal and company tax returns.
  • Be capable of working independently and taking ownership of your workload.
  • Be comfortable answering accounting and tax queries from colleagues.
  • Have excellent attention to detail.
  • Be organised and reliable.
  • Have good communication and client-facing skills.
  • Be comfortable dealing directly with clients.
  • Take pride in producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Have experience using accounting software such as Xero, Sage, QuickBooks or similar.

AAT, ACA or ACCA qualification would be advantageous, but we are equally interested in candidates who are qualified by experience.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who is reliable, practical and commercially minded, and who can become a trusted member of our team.

What We Offer

  • 4-day working week.
  • Flexible working hours – the hours are not fixed and can be worked flexibly to suit the individual and the needs of the practice.
  • £35,000 – £42,000 FTE, depending on experience.
  • Optional Bupa private medical insurance, available for the employee and their family.
  • Friendly and supportive working environment.
  • Varied and interesting client work.
  • Ongoing training and professional development.
  • Opportunity for career progression and increased responsibility.
  • A good work-life balance.

Please note that the advertised salary of £35,000 – £42,000 is the full-time equivalent salary and will be pro-rated to reflect the 4-day working week.

The Person We're Looking For

This role is ideal for an experienced accountant who wants to work in a professional but friendly practice and is looking for a role where they can make a real contribution.

We're not necessarily looking for someone who wants to climb the corporate ladder. We're looking for a dependable accountant who knows their stuff, takes pride in their work and can be trusted to look after our clients and support the team.

If you're an experienced Practice Accountant looking for a 4-day working week, flexible hours, a good work-life balance and a role where you're genuinely valued, we'd love to hear from you.
