About The Role
If you are a confident singer and would like to use this skill to make a difference to people living with dementia, then we’d love to hear from you
Singing for the Brain is a structured group session, designed around the principles of music therapy and singing for people with dementia, who may attend alone or with a carer. These uplifting sessions offer the people attending an enjoyable activity, as well as the chance to socialise with other people affected by dementia.
As a Singing for the Brain Facilitator Volunteer, you’ll utilise your musical knowledge and singing skills to support the facilitation and delivery of a programme of songs, musical activities, and physical movements, ensuring sessions are flexible and responsive to the needs and interests of the people attending. You will be instrumental in creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere where people feel supported and safe to engage with the activities, either online or in person.
As a Singing for Brain Facilitator Volunteer, you'll provide key support with the on-the-day coordination and running of the group. Alongside a team of volunteers, our musician/Singing for the Brain leader, and often alongside an Alzheimer's Society Dementia Adviser, you'll be welcoming people to the group, sharing messages to the group, and keeping records of those attending. You'll be encouraging people attending to participate in the activities on offer and helping to monitor comfort, engagement, and changes attendees experience over time.
Your impact will be helping people toward maximum benefit from the group socialising and the activity's joy.
You'll also support with the set-up and tidying away after the group, and on occasions where a Dementia Adviser is not available you will also act as a link between group participants and Society staff - conducting a volunteer debrief at the end of the session, and referring people to their Dementia Adviser if new needs have arisen.
Interested? To apply for this role please click on the 'Apply' button at the bottom of the page.
For more information please contact volunteering@alzheimers.org.uk
You’ll be great for the role if:
- Have good verbal communication and facilitation skills.
- Have good music knowledge and are able to facilitate a range of songs and musical activities.
- Enjoy meeting people and being part of a team.
- If you are facilitating our virtual sessions, you will need to be able to navigate effectively online and be able to use Zoom with confidence.
- Can demonstrate empathy and compassion.
Minimum age 18.
If you find completing online applications difficult, please don't let this stop you from applying....please call or email us and we can support you with the application process. You can contact the Volunteering Recruitment Team by emailing volunteering@alzheimers.org.uk or call on 0300 222 5706
