One in three students leave school each year without a standard pass (grade 4 or above) in GCSE English and maths, representing over 200,000 16-year-olds every year. This rises to over one in two for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scale of the challenge at 16 extends into adulthood. An estimated 8.5 million working age adults in England have low literacy and numeracy skills. Lacking gateway qualifications locks people out of many opportunities for education and employment and is associated with adverse outcomes for learning potential, health and well-being. 

Get Further exists to change this. Our charity delivers a series of interventions that help disadvantaged learners in Further Education to secure gateway English and maths qualifications that unlock opportunities. These interventions include our award-winning GCSE Resit Tuition Programme, for those resitting GCSEs, our Functional Skills Tuition Programme, supporting those on or aspiring to undertake apprenticeship programmes, and training and resources to support teachers and leaders of English and maths in Further Education. Our central team currently comprises some 40 members, all motivated to reduce educational disadvantage and ensure young people get the gateway qualifications they need to succeed. We currently employ over 100 active tutors. Our main office is in Kings Cross, London, although we also have team members based in Wales, Yorkshire, Birmingham and elsewhere. We share our office with another educational charity, Axiom Maths.

ROLE DESCRIPTION  

As a Get Further Lead Tutor, you will support further education students resitting their GCSE English and/or maths by delivering high-quality tuition in small groups within partner colleges and sixth forms. Using Get Further’s bespoke resources, you will create engaging, supportive learning environments that build students’ confidence, motivation, and academic progress. You will also develop strong relationships with students, tutors and college staff to encourage attendance and maximise impact.

Alongside tutoring, you will play a key role in supporting the wider tutor team. Acting as a role model for high-quality delivery and professionalism, you will work with Curriculum Managers, Programme Coordinators and Programme Managers to share effective tutoring strategies, support student engagement and contribute to improving tutor quality.

The role also includes supporting programme delivery through accurate record keeping, student communication, and helping to coordinate enrolment, scheduling, and attendance, through your on-site presence. This is an ideal opportunity for candidates passionate about educational equity and looking to gain experience in teaching, mentoring, and education programme delivery.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Delivering high-quality tuition (roughly 80% of role)

• Deliver exemplary tutoring sessions, demonstrating an excellent understanding of the curriculum, the subject(s) and the resources.
• Demonstrate expertise and professionalism as a standard for other tutors, setting a benchmark as a role model within the team.
• Demonstrate a positive attitude to professional development, by engaging with and attending our Tutor Academy seminars and workshops.
• Complete and maintain high-quality registers for sessions, to ensure attendance and student progress is recorded accurately and is up to date.
• Create and share high-quality video reflections of your tutoring to allow for feedback and development from Get Further staff.

Student Success and Programme Quality (roughly 20% of role)

• Prepare thoroughly for sessions.
• Attend a 1-hour Lead Tutor Huddle on Fridays at 11am, demonstrating a positive attitude to developing practice and building effective relationships with colleagues.
• Connect with and mentor students, communicating with students outside of their sessions to strengthen positive relationships, attendance, and to gather student feedback.

Other activities that may include:

• Support and build effective relationships with Hourly/Flex Tutors on-site.
• Play a role in the development of our curriculum, by submitting resource reflections to the Curriculum team.
• Support with the organisation’s presence on-site, connecting with and building effective relationships with college partners.

Any other reasonable duties which may occur from time to time, such as support with enrolment, covering tutor absence, attendance initiatives, promotion of the programme, or logistical support on-site.

CORE REQUIREMENTS

• Eligibility to work in the UK.   
• Ability to tutor English and/or maths – as part of the recruitment process, you will be asked to complete a short subject knowledge assessment.  
• Grade C/4 or above in GCSE English and maths (or equivalent).   
• A-level/equivalent qualification at grade B or above in subject/s relevant to English and/or maths.   
• Obtained a 2:1 undergraduate degree or above (strong applicants with a 2:2 will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
• Previous experience teaching or tutoring for a minimum of 3 months.
• Must share Get Further’s commitment to Safeguarding and protecting the wellbeing of children and young people.   
• If successful, your employment will be subject to a DBS check, Right to Work check, social media check, and 2 suitable references.  
• A police check, or police letter of good conduct, may be required for applicants who have lived overseas for longer than 3 months in the last 5 years.   
• Ability to travel to your placement colleges – for some locations this may require you to have a UK driving license and access to a car.

TUTOR TRAINING

Tutor training is held for both flex tutors and Lead Tutors. There will be an additional induction day for Lead Tutors alongside tutor training.

In Person

If you are based near an in-person location, you will be assigned an in-person training as first priority over an online training.

Training is paid at a flat rate.
