Full job description
A highly successful independent school in Barnet is seeking a Sociology Teacher to join its thriving Humanities and Social Sciences department from September 2026.
This is a full-time, permanent position within a school renowned for its academic standards, exceptional pastoral care, and impressive record of university progression.
The School
This co-educational independent school educates approximately 900 students aged 11–18 and is widely recognised for combining academic excellence with outstanding pastoral support.
The school has a large and successful Sixth Form, with students regularly progressing to Russell Group universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, King's College London, and LSE. Sociology is one of the most popular subjects at A Level, attracting academically curious students who enjoy debate, discussion, and critical thinking.
Class sizes are intentionally small, allowing teachers to build strong relationships with students and provide highly personalised support. Staff benefit from a professional environment where teaching is prioritised and teachers are encouraged to innovate within the curriculum.
The Role
You will teach Sociology across Key Stages 4 and 5, delivering engaging lessons that encourage students to explore contemporary social issues, theories, and research methods.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative department where academic discussion is actively encouraged and students are highly engaged with the subject. Teachers are supported by excellent resources and benefit from a culture of professional trust and autonomy.
This position would suit either an experienced Sociology Teacher or an ambitious ECT with strong subject knowledge and a passion for social sciences.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Degree in Sociology or a closely related discipline
- Ability to teach Sociology at GCSE and A Level
- Strong classroom practice and subject knowledge
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
- Commitment to high academic standards
- Legal right to work in the UK
Salary, Hours & Benefits
- Competitive independent school salary
- Full-time, permanent contract
- September 2026 start
- Small class sizes
- Free daily lunch
- Enhanced pension scheme
- Private healthcare contribution
- Excellent CPD and leadership development opportunities
- Modern facilities and specialist teaching resources
- Strong staff retention and progression opportunities
