Job Summary

We are seeking a commercially focused Electrical Estimator to support the preparation of accurate and competitive quotations within the renewable energy and LV/MV switchgear panel manufacturing sector.

This role plays a part in bridging engineering and sales, ensuring that customer requirements are translated into accurate, competitive, and compliant technical proposals by combining cost estimation and proposal development. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving business growth by delivering high-quality, customer-focused bids while maintaining high engineering standards.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Quotation Preparation

Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates and quotations for LV and MV switchgear panels and renewable energy projects, based on client specifications, drawings and tender documents.

Develop cost breakdowns including materials, labour, and overheads

Ensure all estimates are accurate, competitive, and aligned with company margin targets

Maintain and update cost databases, pricing tools, and standard templates

Sales & Proposals Support

Work closely with the sales team to support bid preparation and submission

Assist in developing commercial proposals tailored to customer needs

Contribute to tender documentation, clarifications, and submission packs

Support follow-up activities on quotations to help secure orders

Supplier & Internal Coordination

Liaise with suppliers to obtain competitive pricing, technical information, and lead times

Collaborate with engineering and design teams to validate solutions and ensure cost accuracy

Engage with procurement and production teams to align estimates with operational capabilities

Commercial Awareness

Evaluate project risks, assumptions, and opportunities within each bid

Ensure proposals balance competitiveness with profitability

Assist in negotiations and commercial discussions where required

Technical Understanding (Applied)

Interpret electrical schematics, single line diagrams, and specifications

Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., IEC, BS EN) and customer requirements

Apply knowledge of LV/MV switchgear and renewable systems (e.g., solar, battery storage, grid connections) to develop practical solutions

Continuous Improvement

Analyse completed projects to improve estimating accuracy and processes

Contribute to improving estimating processes, tools, and accuracy

Contribute to the development of standard costing models and tools

Contribute to the upkeep and continuous development of ISO standards across the business

Stay informed on market trends, material costs, and industry developments

Key Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (or 5 years equivalent experience)

Proven experience in estimating within electrical engineering, switchgear manufacturing, or renewable energy sectors

Proven knowledge and experience of using software packages eg Elsteel/Galaxy/Cubic Systems & AutoCAD, EPLAN

Proven experience of using bespoke ERP/CRM quotation software

Experience supporting sales or working in a commercial environment is highly desirable

Technical Knowledge

Understanding of LV/MV switchgear systems and electrical distribution

Working understanding of renewable energy systems such as solar PV and energy storage

Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and specifications

Awareness of industry standards and regulations (IEC, BS EN, etc.)

Commercial Skills

Strong cost estimation and pricing skills

Understanding of project costing, margins, and risk assessment

Ability to balance technical and commercial considerations effectively

Good understanding of margins, risk, and commercial strategy

Ability to develop competitive and commercially sound proposals

Core Skills

Strong numerical and analytical skills

High attention to detail and accuracy

Effective communication and stakeholder management

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and estimating tools
