Campervan Technician

Location: Thirsk, North Yorkshire
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Working Hours: Monday–Thursday, 8:00am–6:00pm
Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 dependent on experience.

About Brown Bird & Co

Brown Bird & Co is a specialist campervan and expedition vehicle conversion company based near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

We design and build premium campervans and adventure vehicles, including conversions based on VW Transporters, Mercedes Sprinters, Land Rover Defenders and Ineos Grenadiers.

Our builds combine traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques, high-quality components and carefully considered design. We have a strong reputation for the quality and individuality of our work and are looking for another skilled person to join our workshop team.

The Role

We are looking for a practical, skilled and versatile Campervan Technician to join our team.

This is very much an all-rounder role although carpentry experience is required. You will be involved in multiple stages of our campervan and vehicle conversions rather than carrying out the same task every day.

Depending on your existing skills and experience, this could include vehicle preparation, insulation and lining, furniture installation, plumbing, 12V electrical installation, fitting appliances and accessories, interior finishing and final assembly.

You don't necessarily need previous campervan conversion experience. We are more interested in finding someone with strong practical skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to learn. Experience in joinery, automotive work, coachbuilding, caravan/motorhome manufacture, vehicle conversions or another skilled trade would all be relevant.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will include:

  • Working across different stages of our campervan and expedition vehicle builds.
  • Vehicle preparation, insulation, lining and interior assembly.
  • Constructing and Installing cabinetry, furniture and interior components.
  • Carrying out general carpentry, trimming, drilling, cutting, fitting and assembly work.
  • Installing water systems, pipework, pumps, tanks and associated components.
  • Assisting with and/or installing 12V electrical systems, lighting, batteries, solar and vehicle charging systems depending on experience.
  • Installing appliances such as fridges, hobs and heating systems.
  • Fitting windows, roof equipment, external accessories and other vehicle components where required.
  • Completing finishing work to the high standard expected on our builds.
  • Following drawings, specifications, job sheets and established build processes.
  • Checking your own work carefully and identifying potential issues before they progress further through the build.
  • Working closely with other members of the workshop team to keep builds moving efficiently.
  • Helping to identify improvements to build methods and workshop processes.
  • Maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.
  • Taking care of customers' vehicles, materials, tools and equipment.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for somebody who is genuinely practical and enjoys making things properly.

Ideally, you will have:

  • Experience within a practical, skilled trade, workshop or manufacturing environment.
  • Good general knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Strong practical and problem-solving abilities.
  • The ability to measure accurately and work neatly and methodically.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • High standards of workmanship and a genuine sense of pride in the finished product.
  • The ability to follow drawings, instructions and established processes.
  • The confidence to work independently once trained while also working effectively as part of a team.
  • A willingness to learn new skills and work across different areas of a conversion.
  • Good communication skills.
  • A positive, reliable and proactive approach to work.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Previous experience in campervan/motorhome conversions, vehicle building, coachbuilding, automotive work, joinery/cabinet making, 12V electrics or plumbing would be particularly useful, but isn't essential if you have strong transferable practical skills.

You'll Fit In Well at Brown Bird If You...

Take pride in your work.
We care about the details, including the ones a customer may never see. If something isn't right, we expect it to be put right rather than simply passed on to the next person.

Take responsibility.
Mistakes can happen. What matters is identifying them early, communicating them and helping to resolve them.

Have high standards.
Our customers are buying a premium product, so we're looking for somebody who naturally notices the difference between "good enough" and properly finished.

Are an all-rounder.
You enjoy variety and are happy moving between different jobs and developing new skills rather than wanting to do one particular task all day.

Can solve problems.
Vehicle conversions don't always go exactly to plan. You need to be able to think practically, find solutions and know when to ask for advice.

Respond well to feedback.
We continually refine the way we build our vehicles, so being open to feedback and willing to learn is important.

Are dependable.
The rest of the team needs to know that if you take responsibility for a job, you'll see it through and communicate if there's a problem.

Are a team player.
We're a relatively small team, so attitude matters. We help each other, share knowledge and expect everyone to contribute.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary based on skills and experience.
  • Four-day working week – Monday to Thursday, 8:00am–6:00pm.
  • Company pension.
  • Full-time, permanent position.
  • Training and development in areas where you may have less experience.
  • The opportunity to develop skills across multiple aspects of campervan and expedition vehicle construction.
  • Varied work across VW Transporters, Mercedes Sprinters, Land Rover Defenders and Ineos Grenadiers.
  • The opportunity to work with premium materials, components and equipment.
  • A small, experienced team where your contribution makes a genuine difference.
  • Free on-site parking.

How to Apply

Please send us your CV together with a short covering email explaining your relevant experience and why you think you'd be a good fit for Brown Bird & Co.

We're particularly interested in practical experience, so if appropriate, you're also very welcome to include photographs or examples of previous work.

We don't expect applicants to already know every aspect of campervan conversion. If you're highly practical, take pride in producing excellent work and have skills that you think would transfer well to the role, we'd still like to hear from you.
