Technical Specialist – Solar O+M

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for an experienced technical professional who is passionate about engineering excellence and enjoys solving complex challenges. You'll be proactive, methodical and confident making technical decisions while supporting engineers, operations teams and customers.

In return, you'll have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of a growing Solar O&M division, working alongside an experienced team within Alt Group and helping deliver industry-leading support to a nationwide portfolio of renewable energy assets

The Role

  • This is a predominantly office-based position within our Solar O&M division, providing technical support to engineers, operations staff and customers across the UK.
  • Working alongside our Asset Manager and O&M Coordinator, you will act as the technical escalation point for complex faults, system performance issues and commissioning activities. Using remote monitoring platforms, technical documentation and manufacturer support, you will diagnose issues, determine the most effective repair strategy and provide expert guidance to our field engineers.
  • This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges and wants to play a key role in the continued growth of one of the UK's expanding renewable energy businesses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical authority for the Solar O&M department.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to field engineers across the UK.
  • Diagnose complex faults using SCADA and remote monitoring platforms.
  • Analyse system performance and identify technical issues affecting generation.
  • Determine appropriate repair strategies and provide technical recommendations.
  • Liaise with inverter, monitoring and equipment manufacturers to resolve technical issues and manage warranty claims.
  • Support commissioning, recommissioning and complex troubleshooting activities.
  • Produce technical reports and remedial recommendations where required.
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, procedures and fault-finding guides.
  • Support the mobilisation of new O&M contracts from a technical perspective.
  • Deliver technical training and mentoring to engineers.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies, firmware updates and industry best practice.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience within commercial and industrial Solar PV Operations & Maintenance.
  • Strong technical understanding of commercial Solar PV systems, including fault diagnosis and performance analysis.
  • Experience using SCADA and remote monitoring platforms.
  • Thorough knowledge of string and central inverter technologies.
  • Strong understanding of communication protocols including Modbus, RS485, Ethernet and fibre communications.
  • Experience commissioning, troubleshooting and recommissioning commercial Solar PV systems.
  • Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, electrical schematics and technical documentation.
  • Experience liaising with manufacturers to resolve complex technical issues and warranty claims.
  • Knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and their integration with Solar PV.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
