Job Description: Project Engineer (Solar PV)


As the UK continues to decarbonise the electricity, heat and transportation sectors, the demand for renewable electricity will continue to increase. Horizon Power & Energy is supporting the transition away from fossil fuels by originating and developing large scale solar PV projects. If you are passionate about climate change and engineering, this may be your opportunity to join a small team focussed upon the identification and development of large solar farms, solar PV car ports and commercial solar PV roofs.

The successful applicant will be part of a small team undertaking feasibility studies, design, development and delivery of large solar PV projects, and will have personal responsibility for the following activities;

Project Design

· Project site surveys

· Project array design and modelling, utilising specialist software

· Electrical system design, utilising specialist software.

· Preparing grid connection applications

· CAD drawing production

Project Development

· Producing project programmes

· Supporting business development and new sales opportunities

· Developing scheme layouts for planning applications

· Managing the scheme development process

· Liaising with specialist consultants

· Managing the submission of project planning applications

Project Execution

· Attending project progress meetings

· Occasional snagging and quality visits for new installations

Your formal place of work will be Southampton Science Park. A regular bus service runs to the Science Park from central Southampton. Some home working may also be allowed, albeit subject to business needs. You will also be required to travel to some project locations, and occasionally spend some nights away.

Your working hours would typically be 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, although you may occasionally be required to work outside of these hours.

In addition to public holidays, will be entitled 25 paid days leave per annum, and this shall be taken through agreement with your manager.


Candidates should ideally possess the following skills and qualifications;

a) Have an interest in learning about sustainability and renewable energy.

b) Degree, HND or HNC qualified in electrical engineering, or suitable electrical experience in lieu

c) Good communication skills, both in person and over the telephone.

d) A natural focus on detail and an ability to follow processes

e) A good team worker, who is enthusiastic and motivated.

f) You should be highly computer literate and comfortable working with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Experience of renewable energy technology, electrical power engineering or project management would be a distinct advantage.


Successful applicants will be expected to complete on-the-job training. Specific training will be given in the following areas, and time will be set aside for this during the early stages of employment. You should also expect to make a limited number of day trips to view project installations.
