Full job description
The English, Maths and ESOL Team has been established at Carshalton College to bring all ESOL, GCSE and Functional Skills provision together within a single department. We’re now seeking a Team Leader - English to join the School Management Team. In this role, you’ll work closely with the Head of School and Deputy Head of School to lead and support colleagues, driving continuous improvement and raising the quality of education across all ESOL and English provision. You’ll also play a key role in curriculum management, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and student achievement.
You’ll lead and support staff delivering English qualifications, monitoring the quality of teaching across GCSE English and ESOL qualifications to ensure it is consistently outstanding. You’ll ensure that provision meets the expectations of students and complies with the requirements of awarding bodies, employers and higher education institutions.
We’d like our Team Leader to hold a teaching qualification, have excellent current teaching skills in English and be recognised as a good or better teacher. With a degree or relevant professional qualifications in an appropriate subject, you’ll have experience of leading/managing GCSE English and/or Functional Skills English and have a track record of making sustained improvements. With a thorough understanding of quality assurance and improvement processes and how these can be used to enhance the student experience, you’ll have experience of managing, supporting and developing staff.
You’ll have experience of successfully monitoring and supporting ‘at-risk’ learners to achieve or exceed their potential with a strong vision for the improvement and development of the curriculum area and current knowledge of impending curriculum changes and the implications for teaching and learning strategies. You’ll be receptive to new ideas and initiatives with a creative approach to problem solving with high personal standards and expectations.
Closing date for the return of completed applications is 9th August 2026.
Interviews will be held on 19th August 2026.
The benefits package includes generous annual leave of 37 days plus up to 8 additional days over Christmas/New Year as well as an additional 5 days Wellbeing leave to enhance employees’ physical and mental health. There is an excellent pension scheme that receives a significant financial contribution from the employer (Teachers Pensions or Local Government Pension Scheme), subsidised sports facilities and professional development and training plus a salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.
As part of our due diligence checks on prospective employees, successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, an online search and proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
As outlined in the Public Sector Equality Duty of the Equality Act 2010, we are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.
