Role Overview:

We are looking for enthusiastic and reliable individuals to run weekly chess clubs for primary school children. You will be responsible for delivering engaging, fun, and structured chess lessons using provided lesson plans and resources. No previous chess expertise is required, though helpful—training and ongoing support will be provided.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver a chess session each week at the same agreed day and time.
  • Follow the provided lesson plans and use the equipment supplied.
  • Create a positive, safe, and encouraging environment for children to learn and enjoy chess.
  • Manage classroom behaviour effectively to ensure smooth sessions.
  • Keep track of game results, noting every child's outcome each week.
  • Distribute awards such as chess piece levels and “Player of the Week” recognitions.
  • Communicate with the club coordinator to provide updates, share feedback, and raise any issues.

What We Provide:

  • Comprehensive training prior to starting in schools.
  • Complete lesson plans and all necessary equipment.
  • Training in chess skills and managing a primary school class.
  • Support from an experienced coordinator who will handle all administrative tasks, including liaising with schools, teachers, and parents.
  • Opportunities to observe and learn from existing coaches.
  • Clear guidance on delivering lessons.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude towards working with children.
  • Ability to manage a classroom and encourage good behaviour.
  • Good communication skills and willingness to provide regular updates.
  • A reliable, punctual, and professional approach to the role.
  • Interest in chess is helpful but not essential!
  • Previous experience working with children is an advantage but not required.

Additional Information:

  • This is a paid role: Dependent on the number of children in the club, we will pay between £30 - £40 per session.
  • The role runs during school term times, typically 10-12 weeks per term.
  • Coaches are expected to follow safeguarding policies and complete any necessary background checks (such as DBS).

If you enjoy working with kids and want to be part of a growing programme, we'd love to hear from you!
