Full job description
The Winchester College Health and Wellbeing Centre (HAWC) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, during term-time. The nurses are well-supported by a doctor, who are also general practitioners at St. Paul’s Surgery in Winchester. A school doctor holds a surgery at HAWC every weekday afternoon. All pupils are registered with the school doctors on admission.
The principal responsibility of the School Nurse is the provision of medical care for pupils and, where appropriate, staff and visitors and for ensuring HAWC is efficiently operating.
This role in the HAWC offers many challenges and opportunities. The School Nurse will be expected to contribute to improving the service provided, as well as to ensure that professional standards are being met at all times. Equally important is having an ability to be welcoming and friendly to pupils, staff and parents. The School Nurse will be expected to visit boarding houses and other departments in order to gain an understanding of how the College operates and to liaise with appropriate staff.

- Carry out the entry examinations for all new pupils and continuous monitoring as appropriate.
- Assist in the promotion of health education throughout the school.
- Liaise with the School Doctor.
- Liaise with the appropriate medical professionals regarding pupil health, including local hospitals, medical officers and other healthcare facilities. For pupils that have consulted a School Doctor, keep the doctor apprised of progress.
- Contribute to effective communication between the HAWC and the school/outside agencies; ensure relevant parties (particularly a pupil’s parents, Housemaster and Matron) are advised of specific situations as quickly as possible.
- Dispense medicines in accordance with current drug protocols, ensuring controls, security and documentation of all drugs/medications is accurately maintained.
- Assist in the maintenance of proper medical records. Ensure the methods are consistent with those used in the doctors’ practice and assure confidentiality.
- Administer vaccines, in accordance with departmental protocols, for the School’s Immunization Programme/Travel and University Entrance Requirements.
- Support the Lead Nurse in the smooth running of the daily GP clinics.
- Attend relevant professional courses, as required, and keep up to date with best practice.
- Attend appropriate health and safety training.
- Carry out routine checks of treatment room stock and hygiene equipment and be aware of recommended storage and disposal guidelines. Restock departmental first aid kits as required.
- Undertake additional duties as may be reasonably required to provide cover in the Medical Centre in case of staff absence or school events or epidemics.
Carry out other duties as reasonably requested by the Health and Wellbeing Centre Manager and/or the Lead Nurse.
