Job summary
At the CMA, our Econometrics Team, within the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser, delivers robust analysis across high-profile cases.
As an Econometrics Adviser, you will deliver complex econometric analysis across mergers, markets investigations, enforcement cases and regulatory appeals. Embedded within case teams, you will design methodologies, test hypotheses and provide evidence to inform decision-making.

Job description
As an Econometrics Adviser you will ensure analysis is high quality, timely and clearly communicated, while providing expert advice and reviewing evidence from external parties. You will contribute to quality assurance and support colleagues undertaking quantitative work.
You will communicate complex findings to varied audiences, build strong stakeholder relationships, and line manage junior colleagues while supporting the CMAs wider econometrics capability.
As an Econometrics Adviser in this role, you will have strong experience in applied econometrics, a relevant postgraduate qualification (ideally a PhD) with demonstrable focus on empirical industrial organisation or econometric analysis with industrial organisation/ competition economics, and experience using tools such as R or Stata.

Person specification

1) Professional qualifications and accreditation: Ideally, have (or be in the process of obtaining) a PhD in economics with a focus on empirical industrial organisation or econometrics. At a minimum, have a post-graduate degree with a demonstrable focus on empirical industrial organisation or econometric analysis with industrial organisation/ competition economics (Lead Criteria).
2) Practical experience in the use of a range of econometric techniques (including cross-sectional, panel data and structural analysis), and experience of the design, development, management and timely delivery of econometric analysis (Lead Criteria).
3) Experience in using R and/or Stata or other econometric software.
4) Experience in presenting and communicating technical and complex econometric analysis to non-technical audiences.
5) Experience of forming and developing influencing relationships with key stakeholders and working in multi-disciplinary teams.

Selection process details
Application and sift stage
- As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV, personal statement and an online application form. Further details about application requirements are listed on the application form.
- The selection process will comprise of the sift (CV & application review), and an interview.
- Please note that it is essential that your personal statement is aligned to provide evidence that you have the knowledge and experience for each of the essential criteria (as included on the role profile attached and listed above under 'Person Specification') in your application. Your personal statement should be no more than 1000 words.
- An initial sift based on the first two criteria points (Lead Criteria) may be held if a large number of applications are received. If your application progresses to a full sift, all elements of the essential criteria listed under Person Specification will then be considered.
- We may raise the score required at sift stage to progress to interview if we receive a high number of applications and take through the highest performing candidates to the interview stage.
- Successful candidates at sift will be invited to an interview which will be conducted either in-person or via Teams.
Interview stage
- At the CMA we apply a blended interview technique, allowing us to find out more about you and we use the Success Profiles framework assessing the Behaviours, Experience (essential criteria) and Technical skills listed in the advert and attached role profile.
- The first part of the interview will comprise of a presentation based on the Technical elements outlined in the role profile, details of which you will sent with your interview invitation.
- The second part is an interview and will be a 45 minute-one hour panel interview where you will be asked questions based on the Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills outlined in the role profile.

Technical elements we will assess at the interview:
At interview, we will assess candidates ability to combine economic theory and econometric methods (including cross-sectional, panel data and structural analysis) to analyse real-world industry issues and inform competition policy.
- A reserve list may be held for up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles.
Timeline (the dates outlined below are indicative and may be subject to change)
- The advert closing date is Thursday 2nd July 2026 (23:55). We are not able to accept late applications.
- The sift is scheduled to take place between 3rd and 10th July 2026.
- Interviews will be held from the week commencing 20th July 2026 onward.
