We're looking for someone practical, fair-minded and organised, who takes responsibility, treats people respectfully and enjoys learning.

Reporting to: General Manager

About Us

Rainham Steel Co Ltd is an established UK steel stockholder, continuing to grow and develop its Scunthorpe operations.

We offer a friendly workplace where people can contribute, develop and build a long-term career.

Assistant Manager – The Role:

Working alongside the General Manager, you'll help keep our yard, warehouse and fabrication operations safe, organised and productive. This hands-on role involves organising daily work, allocating people and keeping production moving.

Each day brings opportunities to adapt, solve problems and keep things moving forward. You'll give direction, maintain standards and have constructive conversations, while remaining approachable and open to others' ideas.

We don't expect all the answers. We value sound judgement, responsibility and knowing when to seek guidance or escalate matters. Experienced senior managers will support your development.

Assistant Manager – What You'll Be Doing:

- Planning daily work across the yard, warehouse and fabrication shop

- Allocating people effectively and setting clear priorities

- Preparing and checking production and loading run lists

- Working with Transport to ensure deliveries are ready on time

- Monitoring progress and resolving problems early

- Supporting employees with feedback and consistent standards

- Promoting safe working practices throughout the operation

- Organising stock and investigating discrepancies or quality concerns

- Checking paperwork, maintaining records and tracking performance in Excel

- Supporting staff development, training and daily team management

- Helping manage holidays, timekeeping and workforce arrangements

- Contributing to improvements in equipment, facilities and working practices

- Checking compliance through observation and reviews, addressing concerns promptly and reinforcing agreed procedures

Assistant Manager – What We're Looking For:

Good management is about more than experience or qualifications. It's how you treat people, approach problems and respond to change.

Essential Criteria

- You communicate clearly, listen and treat people fairly

- You can organise people and prioritise work

- You take responsibility, make decisions and seek advice when needed

- You stay calm and practical when priorities change

- You value health and safety and speak up about concerns

- You give clear instructions, constructive feedback and handle difficult situations respectfully

- You maintain good standards and follow things through

- You welcome ideas and better ways of working

- You have experience in heavy industry

Desirable Criteria

These would be useful, but we don't expect experience in every area:

- Experience leading, supervising, training or organising others, formally or informally

- Experience in the steel sector

- Knowledge of production planning, stock control or transport

- Familiarity with steel products or fabrication

- Experience organising or monitoring work using Excel

- Experience improving working practices or supporting colleagues

- Relevant supervisory, management or safety training

What Matters to Us

We're looking for someone who:

- Leads by example – sets standards through their actions

- Treats people fairly – listens and applies standards consistently

- Takes responsibility – makes decisions and follows through

- Keeps an open mind – welcomes ideas from anyone

- Works well with others – helps colleagues succeed

- Wants to improve – questions methods, learns and develops

Some of the best people don't see themselves as natural managers.

You may already be the person colleagues rely on to organise work or help when things get difficult.

Those qualities matter to us.

Benefits

- Competitive salary dependent on experience

- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays

- Guidance from experienced colleagues and managers

- Opportunities to develop your leadership skills

- Career development within an established company

- A varied role where your ideas make a difference

Apply Today

If this sounds like you, we'd like to hear from you.

You don't need to tick every box or know everything already.

If you are willing to learn, take responsibility and contribute positively, please apply.

You might be exactly the person we're looking for.
