Full job description

Location: Macclesfield, Cheshire (hybrid after introductory period)

Salary: £50,000–£70,000, depending on experience

About us

Celebrating 50 years next year, Northern Structural Services is a well-established civil & structural engineering consultancy. Our portfolio spans bespoke residential design, complex commercial developments, onshore wind turbine foundations and civil engineering. We also have an established structural survey department which we are expanding. Macclesfield has excellent links to Manchester (around 20 minutes) and borders the Peak District.

Who we’re looking for

A structural engineer who enjoys getting out on site, diagnosing defects and turning observations into clear, defensible reports. Experience delivering domestic and mortgage surveys with an understanding of what lenders and homeowners and other stakeholders require.

The role can be tailored for those who prefer a varied workload, including commercial surveys, deeper defect investigations and an element of design if you want it. You can travel UK-wide for variety or stay local if you prefer.

After an introductory period you will be able to work hybrid from our Macclesfield base with some office time for collaboration. This role offers a genuine pathway to help lead the surveying side of the practice, if that is your goal.

Key responsibilities

  • Site inspections and structural assessments (domestic/mortgage, commercial as required)
  • Producing concise, well-reasoned structural engineer’s reports with recommendations
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, insurers and lenders
  • Managing your survey programme, deliverables and communication
  • (Advantageous) Structural design experience

Requirements

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Ideally 5+ years’ UK experience with a strong track record in structural surveys/reports
  • CEng (MIStructE/MICE) desirable; close to Chartership or extensive surveying experience also considered
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Strong written communication and attention to detail
  • Proficient in MS Word;
  • (Advantageous) AutoCAD/Revit/Tekla Tedds/Robot/STAAD/CADS

What we offer

  • Hybrid working after you’ve settled in; flexibility on managing your time around surveys
  • Early-finish Fridays (14:30)
  • £500/year training budget and mentoring (including chartership support where relevant)
  • Cycle to Work scheme (unlimited value via salary sacrifice)
  • Referral bonus (£500–£1,000)
  • 25 days annual leave, with additional holidays accrued for time in service
  • Additional leave milestone: a three-week bonus block after each three years’ service (to be taken over the following three years)
  • Free on-site parking and a friendly, owner-led environment with quick decision-making

How to apply

Email your CV and a short note on your survey experience, domestic/mortgage, any commercial work, and whether you’d like design in to be included in the role, to admin@northernstructuralservices.co.uk.
