At Action for Children, we offer more than just a job. Join us and you’ll be part of a team dedicated to giving children safe and happy childhoods. See how your skills can make a real difference, helping solve the problems children and young people face every day.

A bit about the role

Norfolk's Early Childhood and Family Service (ECFS) supports children aged 0 to 5 and their families through a range of services, including group sessions, parenting programmes and home visits. Working alongside families and partner organisations, ECFS provides information, advice and practical support to help children thrive, with activities covering topics such as parenting, emotional wellbeing and keeping children safe.

What you do could make a difference

As a Family Support Worker, you will play a key role in supporting children and families across Norfolk.

Working as part of a supportive and dedicated team, you'll make a difference by:

  • Helping to plan and deliver engaging group sessions for children aged 0 to 5 and their families.
  • Creating a welcoming space where children can play and learn, and parents can build confidence and connect with others.
  • Offering one-to-one support, including home visits where needed, to help families work towards their goals.
  • Helping to keep children safe by recognising concerns and following safeguarding procedures.
  • Building positive relationships with partner organisations so families can access the support they need.
  • Working alongside families and colleagues to build on families' strengths and recognise the progress they make.
  • Listening to children and parents and using their ideas to help shape our groups and support.
  • Keeping clear, accurate records of your work with children and families.

Let's talk about you.

We're looking for someone enthusiastic about working with children and families, who is keen to learn and develop their skills as a Family Support Worker Apprentice. You'll find full details in the attached job description, but the ‘must-haves’ are:

  • A willingness to study towards a relevant qualification and complete the learning required for your apprenticeship.
  • An interest in supporting young children and their families, and a positive approach to working with others.
  • A willingness to learn from experienced colleagues and develop your skills in supporting families.
  • Basic IT skills and a willingness to learn how to use Microsoft Office and our recording systems.
  • Compassion and dedication to our cause – keeping children and young people safe and happy.
  • Access to a suitable method of transport to enable the duties of the role to be carried out (essential).

Your apprenticeship

You'll work towards a relevant Level 2, Level 3 or Level 4 apprenticeship while gaining practical experience supporting children and families. We'll work with you and the training provider to agree the most appropriate programme, taking account of your existing qualifications, experience and learning needs.

You'll have support from experienced colleagues and paid time for your apprenticeship training. We will provide regular one to one supervision and wellbeing support to help you achieve your qualifications, develop your skills and ensure you have the guidance and support you need to succeed in your role.

Who can access apprenticeship funding?

An apprentice must:

  • Be aged 16 or over.
  • Spend at least 50% of their working hours in England.
  • Undertake an approved apprenticeship standard.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK and meet residency requirements.
  • Not be enrolled on another apprenticeship or funded qualification.

Why Action for Children?

We've been driven by love to take action for children for over 150 years, giving them the protection and practical help they need. A lot’s changed since 1869. But what children really need, hasn’t. So as long as children need us, we’ll be here.
