Full job description

We’re looking for a Data Product Owner to join the Data team in our IT department to help us fulfil the ambitious goals of the organisation. Many of these goals need to be supported with quality data and our ability to process this data at scale.

Strong knowledge of data management technologies and where each can be applied, strong analytical & problem solving skills and experience in Agile project management framework is required.

About the Role:

As Data Product Owner, you will manage the data platform and the service the data team provide to the business to enable self-serve data access and analytics capabilities.
You will engage with stakeholders to understand the requirements for data solutions and organise a growing team of 3 data engineers to deliver these requirements, ensuring requirements are appropriately prioritised. You’ll act as project manager for data projects and use agile principles with iterative development cycles to deliver changes to the data platform.

You will be key in shaping the data platform and ensuring the business has access to
mission-critical data ensuring data integrity, timeliness & quality of service. You will work closely with the Head of Data and strive for a best-in-class data platform to underpin all business reporting and analytical requirements.

About the Team:

The team is made up of 3 Data/ BI Engineers with a broad skillset across data engineering & reporting

  • We’re a growing team that is transforming our IT landscape to build a better business.
  • We’re building a data platform based on Microsoft SQL Server (and SSIS) and AWS Big
  • Data technologies such as Glue & Athena:
  • We work closely with Product teams to ensure data requirements are captured & deliveredas part of product deliveries.
  • We provide a reporting outlet for our data using Tableau.
  • We work agilely to deliver changes frequently that are aligned with our business strategy.
  • We work closely with the Analytics team to ensure data is available to support analytics initiatives & data discovery.
  • As well as providing data to support reporting data sources, the team also builds & maintains data pipelines (SSIS/ AWS Glue) to feed into production services.

Key Responsibilities:

The Data Product Owner will:

  • Work with business stakeholders to collect data requirements and progress these requirements through analysis, scoping, estimation and prioritisation.
  • Have strong knowledge of Agile/ Scrum methodologies.
  • Organise data requirements into sprint cycles for the data engineering team to deliver.
  • Manage enterprise-wide data projects including data warehouse, data lake & event streaming delivery mechanisms.
  • Manage various work streams with competing priorities including major projects, tactical quick-wins & mandatory/ technical projects.
  • Provide the data engineering team with clarity and direction around business requirements.
  • Own the data engineering backlog ensuring projects are reviewed & evolve through the data development lifecycle in line with organisational objectives & priorities.
  • Coordinate regular scrum ceremonies, ensuring the team is communicating effectively and evolving & improving from experiences (Scrum Master).
  • Build & maintain relationships with product owners, project sponsors/ stakeholders, technical leads and wider IT team.
  • Have experience managing a data platform and be aware of key performance metrics to ensure stable & fit-for-purpose data/ service availability.
  • Be passionate about data and able to convey its value, being aware of trends in the data space and how they can contribute to our vision.

Skills/ Experience:

  • Strong analytical & problem solving skills.
  • Experience in Agile project management framework.
  • Atlassian project management/ collaboration tools (Confluence/ JIRA)
  • Strong communication skills and confidence to communicate at all levels.
  • Strong knowledge of data management technologies and where each can be applied.
  • Ability to analyse data using SQL & visualisation tools (We use Tableau).
  • Experienced in managing projects utilising data warehouse/ data lake delivery methods.
  • Experience working with AWS Data stack (Glue/ Lake Formation/ Athena), MS SQL Server
  • (T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS) & Tableau Server or equivalent technologies.
