Pay: £14.50 per hour, equivalent to £28,275 gross per annum

Enjoy working with food and customers?

PJ’s Deli is looking for a friendly, organised and hands-on Senior Deli Assistant to help deliver our weekday breakfast, lunch and grab-and-go service.

You will support food preparation, customer service, stock control, cleaning and daily food-safety checks while helping the Chef Manager keep the deli calm, welcoming and well organised.

This role would suit someone with experience in a café, deli, workplace restaurant or similar food-service environment who is ready to take on additional day-to-day responsibility.

Role Purpose

The Senior Deli Assistant will support the Chef Manager with the smooth and consistent operation of PJ’s Deli.

You will help prepare and serve breakfast, grab-and-go products and lunch items while ensuring counters remain clean, stocked and attractively presented. You will also support daily food-safety checks, allergen controls, PPDS labelling, stock rotation and cleaning routines.

Although the Chef Manager retains overall day-to-day responsibility for the deli, you will be a trusted senior member of the team and may help coordinate routine tasks or support service in their absence.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience in a café, deli, catering, hospitality or food-service environment.
  • Experience with basic food preparation and customer service.
  • A good understanding of food hygiene and cleaning standards.
  • Confidence working with recipes, portion sizes, checklists and procedures.
  • A reliable, organised and hands-on approach.
  • Ability to remain calm and efficient during busy service periods.
  • Clear and friendly communication skills.
  • Willingness to support food-safety, allergen and compliance checks.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Level 2 Food Safety qualification.
  • Formal allergen-awareness training.
  • Experience producing and labelling grab-and-go or PPDS food.
  • Experience using a till or electronic point-of-sale system.
  • Experience with stock rotation, delivery checks and waste recording.
  • Previous responsibility for opening or closing a café, deli or food-service area.
  • Experience supporting or supervising other team members.

Success in the Role

You will be successful when:

  • The deli is opened, stocked and presented well each day.
  • Breakfast and lunch services run smoothly.
  • Customers receive consistently friendly and efficient service.
  • Food-safety, cleaning and allergen procedures are followed.
  • Grab-and-go products are correctly prepared, labelled and displayed.
  • Stock is properly rotated and waste is reported.
  • The Chef Manager and wider deli team are effectively supported.
  • The deli feels welcoming, organised and dependable.

What We Offer

  • £14.50 per hour, equivalent to £28,275 gross per annum.
  • Consistent Monday-to-Friday daytime hours.
  • No regular evening, weekend or split-shift working.
  • A varied role combining food preparation, customer service and team support.
  • The opportunity to develop additional responsibility within an established workplace deli.
  • A friendly, practical and customer-focused working environment.

Pay: £14.50 per hour
