Global Manager, Technical Documentation

Location: Sunrise Medical - Brierley Hill, UK
Department: R&D Engineering
Reporting to: Global Engineering Services & Configuration Management

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Global Manager, Technical Documentation to lead and develop our technical documentation team. This is a key role responsible for shaping the future of customer-facing and service-related technical content across our global product portfolio.

You will oversee the creation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of technical publications including owner's manuals, spare parts catalogues, service documentation, and product literature. Working closely with Engineering, Product Management, Regulatory, and IT teams, you will drive a modern documentation strategy that enhances customer experience, supports compliance requirements, and enables scalable digital content delivery.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technical documentation leader who is passionate about innovation, digital transformation, and building high-performing global teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and develop a global team of technical documentation professionals, currently based across multiple locations.
  • Define and implement the global technical documentation strategy, ensuring alignment with company standards and brand guidelines.
  • Oversee the creation, translation, maintenance, and publication of:
  • Owner's manuals
  • Spare parts catalogues
  • Service instructions
  • Technical product literature
  • Drive the transition from traditional print documentation to modern digital and multi-channel delivery platforms, including web-based and interactive solutions.
  • Partner with R&D, Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, and IT to ensure documentation is accurate, compliant, and accessible.
  • Champion the adoption of structured authoring methodologies, content management systems (CMS), and content reuse strategies.
  • Ensure effective documentation support for new product development (NPD) and sustaining engineering activities across all business segments.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve documentation quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors, translation providers, and publishing partners.
  • Develop and maintain robust document control processes to ensure consistency and compliance across global markets.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional development within the documentation team.

About You

You are a strategic leader with a strong background in technical communication and documentation management within an engineering or manufacturing environment. You combine excellent people leadership skills with a passion for improving how technical information is created, managed, and delivered.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in technical documentation, technical communication, or product information management.
  • At least 3 years' experience leading teams or managing technical documentation functions.
  • Experience creating or managing documentation for complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
  • Strong understanding of technical documentation standards, regulatory requirements, and global compliance considerations.
  • Proven experience with Content Management Systems (CMS), structured authoring environments (such as DITA or XML-based systems), and digital publishing platforms.
  • Demonstrated success leading cross-functional projects and driving organisational change.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and organisational skills.
  • Fluent English language skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with technical illustration tools and CAD-based graphics.
  • Knowledge of spare parts documentation and service information processes.
