We are looking for a proactive and skilled Technical and Events Co-Ordinator to join our Students’ Union team. This role is central to the successful delivery of student-led events as well as our busy external business. Collectively we run over 400 events a year for students and the public in our venues – from quiz nights and Bongos Bingo to conferences and Trade shows. You will be a critical team member supporting venue operations across our campus spaces.

Main Purpose of the Post:
To support the Facilities and Events department in delivering high-quality events at Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU). You will take responsibility for technical setups, maintenance, lighting and sound design, and operational support across a wide range of events – including club nights, live music, conferences, and student showcases.

A key focus of this role is the training and coordination of student staff in all technical and operational procedures. You will also have overreaching responsibility for the maintenance, repair, and compliance of the Students' Union's entire equipment inventory, ensuring all technical equipment used during events is maintained to the highest standards.

About You

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in live sound and lighting, including programming consoles, rigging and derigging equipment, and troubleshooting in a fast-paced environment. You should be comfortable supporting both large-scale events (e.g. Freshers’ Week, Live gigs and conferences) and smaller student productions and events

Strong organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively with student groups, volunteers, and Union staff are essential. A patient and approachable manner is key, as you will also help train and supervise our Student Technical Staff team.

Teesside University Students’ Union is a vibrant, student-centred organisation based in the heart of Middlesbrough. You’ll be working in a across our main venue The Hub and our Student bar. As we continue to grow our external events programme and venues for hire services, you’ll have the opportunity to help shape our technical offering and develop new production standards. Full training on in-house systems and ongoing professional development will be provided.

Working Hours and Location

This is a permanent, full-time role working annualised hours of 37 hours per week. Due to the operational nature of the venues and services, the postholder will be required to work regular evenings and weekends, particularly to support events, peak periods, and core service delivery. Flexibility is essential, as working hours will be scheduled in line with business needs across multiple sites. Please note our venues close for the Christmas vacation period in line with University closure dates, with reduced operations during the Easter and summer vacation periods.

The role is primarily based at Teesside University Students’ Union in Middlesbrough a multi-use entertainment venue.

We have a flexible approach and are open to applications from candidates that may require some variation to the contracted hours or hybrid arrangements (although this is not a fully remote role). Salary Details

The salary is Scale 5 - £28,221 to £30,559 per annum, Grade 5, pay award pending for August 2026. It is usual to start at the bottom of the grade, and this will increase incrementally on an annual basis but for the right candidate we are prepared to negotiate the starting salary

Job Title: Technical and Events Co-ordinator

Responsible to: Head of Facilities and Events

Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Operations and Event Delivery

• To support the Head of Facilities and Events in the provision of high-quality events at the Students’ Union.
• To provide expert technical services for all events, including the setup, operation, and pack-down of lighting, sound, staging, and AV equipment.
• To plan events in accordance with current procedures, working to strict production deadlines and technical schedules.
• To act as the primary technical contact for visiting companies and performers, assisting with get-ins, get-outs, and ensuring their technical requirements are met.
• To monitor event trends and identify potential opportunities for new equipment or service offerings, advising the Facilities and Events Manager accordingly.

Equipment Management, Maintenance, and Compliance

• To be the lead for the operation, regular maintenance, and repair of all Students' Union equipment, including sound, lighting, staging, and AV.
• To oversee and manage the annual Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) schedule for all SU equipment and IT, ensuring full legal compliance.
• To maintain and manage the central asset register for all SU equipment and IT, ensuring all items are logged, tracked, and their condition is documented.
• To manage the technical inventory of stock and consumables, ordering supplies as needed and within budget.
• To carry out assigned and general maintenance of equipment and facilities, troubleshooting faults and arranging for professional repairs when necessary.
• To ensure all technical equipment is stored securely and in a manner that preserves its condition.

Student Staff Training and Coordination

• To line manage the Student Technical staff and to deputise as the line manager to other student staff within the Facilities and Events department.
• To take a leading role in the recruitment of student staff for technical and event support roles.
• To design, coordinate, and deliver a comprehensive training programme for student staff. This includes:
• Induction and onboarding processes.
• Practical training on the safe and effective use of all technical equipment (sound, lighting, AV).
• Training on event setup and pack-down procedures.
• Coaching on customer service excellence and professional conduct.
• Regular refresher training and upskilling opportunities.
• To create and maintain a centralised log of student staff competencies and training records.
• To assist in the preparation of rotas and documentation required for the working hours of department student staff.

Safety and Compliance

• To abide by relevant Health and Safety and Licensing requirements and to ensure all visiting performers, contractors, student staff, and the public also conform to these requirements.
• To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of employees, performers, and customers at all times.
• To maintain a good working knowledge of the building’s equipment and services.
• To conduct, document, and communicate risk assessments and method statements for all event-related activities.
• To ensure that all areas of TUSU are kept secure and to organise staff whilst on duty.
• To undertake relevant training provided on-site pertaining to the safe use of equipment and to cascade this training to student staff.
• To ensure the adherence to procedure and instructions relating to fire and accidents, Health and Safety Regulations.

Financial and Administrative

• To support the Head of Facilities and Events in all financial areas, ensuring strict financial control and accountability.
• To work within agreed budgets, particularly regarding equipment maintenance, repairs, and new purchases.
• To work closely with finance and administration staff to ensure the efficient administration of the department finances and records.
• To maintain all administrative records and files necessary for the sound management of the department, including equipment logs, training records, and compliance documentation.

General

• To present a polite and professional attitude when liaising with clients, customers, or promoters.
• To implement and encourage best practice in planning, operational, and digital activity.
• To abide by the Students’ Union constitution, policies, and procedures at all times.
• To attend meetings, conferences, and training events as required.
