Full job description

We’re the team behind the UK’s telecom networks—designing, building, upgrading, and maintaining the infrastructure that keeps the country connected. From large-scale fibre rollouts to critical civils delivery, Comex 2000 combines expertise, pace, and quality to deliver essential infrastructure across the UK.

We’re looking for a commercially driven and experienced Defects Manager to lead our end-to-end defect management function. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for protecting margin, reducing risk, and driving a ‘right first time’ culture across our operations.

You’ll lead, develop, and engage a team to ensure defects are identified, managed, resolved, and prevented effectively—while maintaining strong relationships with Local Authorities, clients, and operational teams. Your focus will be on data-led decision making, compliance, and continuous improvement, ensuring the business operates efficiently and compliantly.

If you’re passionate about quality, performance, and driving operational excellence, this is your opportunity to make a real difference.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the end-to-end defect lifecycle, from identification through to resolution and closure, ensuring statutory deadlines are met
  • Monitor and manage defect ageing and risk, proactively reducing exposure to S74 penalties and FPNs
  • Drive a “right first time” culture by identifying root causes and implementing preventative actions
  • Ensure full compliance with streetworks legislation, codes of practice, and internal standards
  • Manage defect-related disputes and challenges, protecting commercial outcomes and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships
  • Develop and oversee performance dashboards and reporting, providing insight into trends, risks, and financial exposure
  • Use data and analytics to improve quality, efficiency, and operational performance
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives, streamlining processes and enhancing system capability
  • Monitor and forecast financial impact, identifying cost drivers and implementing mitigation strategies
  • Act as the key escalation point for defect-related issues, ensuring timely and effective resolution
  • Build strong relationships with Local Authorities, clients, and supply chain partners

About you

  • Strong leadership experience managing teams within streetworks, civils, telecoms, or utilities environments
  • Extensive knowledge of defect management, inspections, and streetworks legislation
  • Proven ability to reduce defect volumes and drive quality improvements
  • Experience managing FPNs, S74 charges, and formal disputes
  • Commercially aware with the ability to link performance to financial outcomes
  • Strong analytical skills with experience using data and reporting tools (Excel, Power BI)
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Proactive, solution-focused, and able to operate in a fast-paced, high-accountability environment
  • Experience driving process improvements and system enhancements
