Job Overview
Relief Weekend Support Worker (*This is a relief position for someone wanting to join our bank of relief workers to facilitate weekend services at The Porch)*.
Saturdays 8am - 2pm
Sundays 8am - 2pm
About The Porch:
The Porch (Established 1985) is a Queens Award Charity that has been delivering vital services to the homeless and vulnerably housed adults in East Oxford for over 35 years. The Porch is a small organization with big ambitions on positive outcomes for its members (service users). This is a challenging role for individuals who are interested in helping others to bring about positive life changes.
The Porch Day Centre provides essential support and services to vulnerable and homeless individuals in the local community. It offers a safe and welcoming environment where those in need can access various resources and assistance. Some of the services we provide at the Porch include:
1. Meals: Providing hot meals and snacks to those in need.
2. Showers and Laundry: Access to shower facilities and laundry services for personal hygiene.
3. Clothing and Toiletries: Distribution of donated clothes and toiletries.
4. Social Support: A place where individuals can connect with others and find a sense of community.
5. Information and Advice: Offering guidance on housing options, healthcare, and other support services available in the community.
6. Educational and Vocational Support: Providing opportunities for skill development and job training.
7. Health Services: Sometimes, basic medical check-ups or consultations are offered.
Main purpose of job:
Reporting to The Porch Service Manager, the post holder will be responsible for supporting the effective delivery of high-quality care and support according to The Porch policies and procedures, including:
- Providing and responding to the variety of support needs of the Charity service users i.e. housing, addiction, mental and/or physical care, education, employment, financial advocacy.
Main Areas of Responsibility:
The role of the weekend Support Worker will essentially involved the safe and effective delivery of The Porch core services for weekend breakfast sessions, specifically targeting individuals that are experiencing homelessness. i.e. individuals that are Rough Sleeping, Sofa Surfing and/or in Temporary Emergency Accommodation.
Weekend Support Workers will be responsible for:
1. Meals: Provide Breakfast, snacks and refreshments
2. Showers and Laundry: Providing access to the shower and laundry facilities.
3. Clothing and Toiletries: Providing access to The Porch clothing store and toiletries as requested.
4. Internet/On-line Access: Providing access to The Porch IT facilities including guest wi-fi.
5. Restroom: Providing access to The Porch rest room, ensuring the environment is safe, clean and comfortable.
6. Social Support: Providing a welcoming environment where individuals can feel safe, connect with others and find a sense of community.
7. Information and Advice: Providing signposting advise and guidance for housing related issues, healthcare, and other support needs.
8. Data recording: Ensure the concise recording of relevant information is recorded and conducted in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and as such my rights under the Data Protection Act 2018.
Other responsibilities:
- Maintain a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
- Food preparation and cooking of meals.
- To assess risk and suitability of referrals for the service.
- To be flexible and adaptable in the running of the centre.
- Maintain positive client satisfaction; giving a respectful communication and service to clients. Ensure clients are aware of and support them to maximize their opportunity to be involved in Client Participation.
- To encourage client engagement in the porch and other supporting services
- To work in collaboration with other network providers in the delivery of homelemess and/or tenancy support, drug and alcohol-based support, mental health amd physical support
- To provide basic first aid.
- To ensure that hygiene standards are maintained throughout the building.
- To assess and manage risk for individuals and the service, reporting concerns to the Service Manager in line with policies and procedures.
- Manage challenging situations in line with procedures and to ensure the safety of yourself and others.
- To ensure The Porch’s Equal Opportunities Policies are complied with and promoted in carrying out duties of the post.
- To work with the team in ensuring The Porch has good publicity, effective websites, effective literature and publicity material, and that talks and promotions are delivered as required. Along with articles written for the newsletter.
- To undertake any other appropriate responsibilities that may arise and anything else commensurate with your role and level of responsibility, that from time to time, may be deemed necessary by the Service Manager and/or the Director.
