The Role

Thomson Sawmills is a well-established, family-run timber processing business with over 40 years of experience. We are looking to recruit a motivated and practical Trainee Electrical & Automation Engineer to join our maintenance team and work alongside our experienced engineers.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career in industrial engineering, electrical maintenance and automation.

The successful candidate will receive hands-on training and mentoring while working on a wide range of production machinery and electrical systems within our busy sawmill environment.

This role is intended to develop into an Electrical & Automation Engineer position. Whilst the successful candidate will assist with both mechanical and electrical maintenance, a strong interest in electrical engineering, fault finding and automation is essential.

No two days are the same, and the successful candidate will gain valuable experience across all aspects of electrical and mechanical maintenance and repair.

Duties Will Include

● Assisting experienced engineers with electrical and mechanical maintenance work

● Learning electrical fault-finding techniques

● Assisting with breakdown repairs on production machinery

● Supporting planned preventative maintenance programmes

● Learning how to diagnose faults on PLC-controlled equipment

● Assisting with sensors, motors, drives and electrical control systems

● Working on conveyors, saw lines, cutters and associated equipment

● Assisting with bearing, belt and component replacement

● Learning hydraulic and pneumatic systems

● General workshop duties and housekeeping

● Assisting with electrical installations and modifications where appropriate

● Developing knowledge of industrial automation and control systems

Preferred Experience

One of the following is required -

● Electrical Engineering qualification (Level 2, Level 3, HNC or equivalent)

● Mechatronics or Engineering qualification

● Electrical installation or maintenance experience

● Agricultural engineering background

● Manufacturing or industrial maintenance experience

● Automotive electrical experience

● Experience using electrical test equipment

● Understanding of motors, sensors and control systems

Career Development

Weekly Pay

Progression Opportunity to Electrical & Automation Engineer £45,000 - £60,000+

£30,000 - £35,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications

Pay: £30,000.00-£35,000.00 per year
