How we work at Sensory Specialists

We deliver essential services to people with sensory loss or deafness. Our work is practical, person‑centred and rooted in respect.

We are passionate about the difference our services make and believe that:

  • Everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently and participate fully in their community
  • Support should be tailored to the individual, not a one‑size‑fits‑all approach
  • Advocacy and partnership are key to long‑term wellbeing

Our work includes:

  • Supporting people with sensory loss or deafness to realise their potential
  • Delivering specialist sensory support so people can function confidently within their communities
  • Advocating on behalf of individuals to improve physical and mental wellbeing

Our values

  • Integrity: doing the right thing, even when it is difficult
  • Honesty: being open and transparent
  • Reliability: being someone the others can depend on
  • Respectfulness: treating people with dignity and modelling the behaviour we expect
  • Helpfulness: support others as you would want others to support you

This is an apprenticeship, so we’re not looking for someone who already knows everything.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is able to balance studying with practical work
  • Enjoys problem-solving and learning through experience
  • Is comfortable travelling by public or private transport and working outdoors when needed
  • Has a genuine interest in supporting people with sight loss or dual sensory loss to live more independently
  • Communicates with empathy, patience and respect, and can adapt their approach to different individuals

Essential requirements:

  • Level 2 Maths and English
  • BSL Level 2 or above
  • Lives in the Royal Borough of Greenwich - your application will not be considered if you reside outside the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

You are likely to thrive if you:

  • Share our commitment to high‑quality, person‑centred services
  • Are motivated to learn and develop professionally
  • Care deeply about improving people’s lives
  • Take responsibility for your work and manage your time effectively
  • Are comfortable working independently while being part of a supportive team
  • Can handle confidential information appropriately
  • Approach challenges with a positive, thoughtful mindset

About the role

As a Trainee Rehabilitation Worker and Deafblind Assessor, you will be training to deliver specialist support that helps people with sensory loss live safely, independently and with dignity.

With supervision and structured learning, you will work with individuals and groups to:

  • Build confidence, independence and everyday living skills
  • Support meaningful participation in education, employment, leisure and community life
  • Develop communication skills using methods such as braille, assistive technology and adapted communication approaches

Your training will include learning how to:

  • Carry out specialist assessments in people’s homes
  • Plan and review rehabilitation support that promotes safety, choice and independence
  • Deliver daily living skills training (home management, work and leisure)
  • Provide communication training (IT, braille, deafblind manual, block alphabet)
  • Support mobility and orientation indoors and outdoors
  • Work alongside NHS and other professionals to maximise outcomes
  • Advocate for individuals and help them access the right support and services

Working responsibly

As part of the role, you will also learn how to:

  • Maintain accurate records using Microsoft systems
  • Follow safeguarding, equality, health and safety and data protection requirements
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations
  • Take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others

These responsibilities are fully supported through training, supervision and mentoring.
