Trainee Scientist jobs

Bureau Veritas, a leading Commodity Inspection Company, is offering someone the opportunity to join us as a (Trainee) Petrochemicals Chemist at our West Thurrock, Essex facility. The primary role entails the analysis of petroleum products to ascertain quality, as they are transferred between sea going vessels and shore-based terminals/refinery installations. Full training will be given.

Location: West Thurrock, Essex.

Key Accountabilities: -

· To perform analysis in accordance with ASTM, IP and other prescribed / in-house methodology using a range of instrumental and physical testing techniques for all Oil and Petrochemical commodities, from Crude Oil through Petroleum Products and Chemicals to Petroleum Gases.

· To draw samples from various locations such as Refineries, Storage Terminals, Marine Tankers, and Road Vehicles, as directed by the Site Supervisor for the purposes of analysis or sample dispatch requirements, in strict accordance with relevant IP / ASTM / ISO / API or internal procedures.

· To perform all duties in accordance with client requirements as well as Bureau Veritas and Industry standards.

· To ensure that all activities are performed in compliance with all company and third-party site HSE requirements.

· To produce final Certificates of Quality from either manual or computerised systems in accordance with the client’s instructions, Bureau Veritas procedures and other company guidelines.

· To perform basic periodic calibrations of laboratory instruments, internally or externally.

· Ensure that the equipment is efficiently and effectively used and maintained.

· To assist in the cleaning and tidying of the laboratory, to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.

· To ensure diligent, timely and accurate reporting of analytical results.

· To witness analysis of the commodity in third-party laboratories if required.

· To promote and always represent the company in a professional manner.

Candidate Profile: -

· A-Level (or equivalent) in Chemistry or another science

· GCSE Maths and English, Grade C and above.

· Full clean manual driving licence.

· Computer literate, in particular Word and Excel.

· Be prepared to work unsocial and unscheduled hours including weekends and Bank Holidays in line with shipping movements which are 24/7-365 days a year.

· Be comfortable with the physical demands of the job, including being prepared to work outdoors and at heights.

· Have good communication skills with the ability to liaise with people at all levels.

· Be self-motivated with an inquisitive nature and have an eye for detail.

· Be able to work independently with minimal supervision, or as part of a team.

Desirable Experience: -

· Previous experience of working in a laboratory, preferably in the Oil and Petrochemicals Industry.

· Previous experience of working within an ISO 17025 laboratory would be an advantage
